How the Liberty Tree in Friendswood got its name

Friendswood is known for its beautiful majestic trees that thrive along the many creeks winding throughout the town. One tree in Friendswood is well-known to locals…although most people have no idea why the tree is so special.

The Liberty Tree in FriendswoodThe Liberty Tree is a very beautiful old tree that is located right in the middle of “old Friendswood”. There is a small sign alongside its trunk, identifying its name, but there is no information on the sign about the significance of the tree. There is a time capsule commemorating the bicentennial celebration of the United States right behind the tree…which is a clue as to how it became the Liberty Tree.

Bicentennial Time Capsule in Friendswood

The Liberty Tree got its name in 1976, the bicentennial year, when the city was putting in some new road improvements. A new road was being put in, and the beautiful old tree was right in the middle of the planned road, destined to be cut down. Because of citizen efforts to save the tree, the city built the road to go around it. The citizens then gave the tree its name – The Liberty Tree.

The Liberty Tree is located on Spreading Oaks between Friendswood Drive (FM 518) and Sunset. If you’re driving down Spreading Oaks, you can’t miss it! It’s a reminder that the citizens of Friendswood love their country, and value the trees God planted in this beautiful small suburban town!

Hi Rose -

Now the Liberty Tree and it's history is very cool.  I love old, wise looking trees and can only imagine the stories they could tell if only they could speak.  The community pulling together to save this tree is a perfect example of what we could / should be doing today in many other areas of our lives and country.  Liberty For All.....
