We enjoyed another fun and interesting evening in McKinney, Texas last night.
Beginning the evening with the viewing of the 1925 film version of The Phantom of the Opera, starring Lon Chaney, Sr., and directed by Rupert Julian, is said to be one of the more influential adaptations of Gaston Leroux's novel The Phantom of the Opera, in which a disfigured phantom haunts the Paris Opera House, trying to force the people who run it to make the woman he loves a star. It is most famous for Lon Chaney's intentionally horrific, self-applied makeup which was kept a studio secret until the film's premier. Universal Studios' soundstage #23, where the movie was filmed, is said to be haunted.
This file was a silent film and the only sound was from the massive concert grand organ, also built in 1925.
All music and "accents" to the film as it ran were from the grand organ and it was wonderful. The organist played through then entire move and it was as much fun watching a film created 80 some years ago as it was watching the master organist wave his hands magically over the keyboard.
After the move we were hungry and made our way to Spoon café and since it just closed went to the Cadillac Bar for a Pizza. Priss wanted a club sandwich vs., a pizza so we ordered two of them. A few minutes later the water gave me a pizza box with the club sandwich's and home we went ...
What a surprise! These were Pizza Club sandwiches! One could have fed us both, they were good and I had part of the leftover for lunch, thank you very much!
