Pay It Forward Through Volunteering

 Volunteer

I believe that most people are good and generous with a desire to help others in some way.  I also believe that a lot of people just don’t know where to find opportunities to direct their energies.

Our local paper, the Sandusky Register, posts a section on ways to volunteer every Sunday's newspaper.

Some of the opportunities include:

*Drivers are needed to transport people to their medical appointments on an as needed basis

*Serve lunch and bus tables in a senior facility

*Help with an afterschool program for children doing homework, playing in the gym or participating in other supervised activities

*Working outside to help many of our non-profit agencies batten down the hatches by cleaning flower beds, raking leaves, winterizing.

* Helping at the local Humane Society

                                     Volunteeer

Most churches or museums or theaters also have longs list of things to do as well as your local hospital or nursing home.

The easiest way to get started is to lift your index finger and dial the phone.  Come on, you can do it.

Being able to volunteer your time and energy answers the human need to be apart on something bigger than them selves.

Thanks for the reminder of where one can find ideas for volunteering!  There is a soup kitchen/homeless shelter within walking distance of my home!  You made me think about volunteering there - now I just donate money!

Thank you for reminding us about the joys and opportunities that volunteering brings about... I used to volonteer at my children's school when they were young and now that they are both adults (29 & 26) I find myself helping out other groups that I feel connected to...or simply doing something that I love, like wrapping X-mas gifts during the holidays... it's a great way to meet other people with the same interests!

Ann,  Yep, yep...just do it.  Do you have any interest in the soup kitchen?  I can get you started.  You already make a difference dear friend, in so many ways.

Bill,  Children and animals will always have a special place in my heart.  Our local Humane Society has so many opportunities for volunteers

Cathy,  You said it much better than I.   Just one person can make a change, can make a difference, can impact the life of another....such a powerful thing we can do

Hi Bob,  Thank you.  Just a little step outside our comfort zone to get started

Debbie, I know your donations are such a blessing to the kitchen.  Sometimes they just need a sub to serve or sweep up or do dishes.  I'd love to know if you decide to go

Sylvie,  So much need, indeed.  Sometimes it's not even so much doing as taking the time to be there for someone.

Rebecca,  Kind of fun to see my face on the Featured list. Even more fun to hear from others out there. Congrats to you as well.

Monique,  It is so much about connecting isn't it.  I love to cook, so I get to be an Iron Chef at the Soup Kitchen.  It sound like you have the true heart of a servant (I mean that in a good way).  Thank you for taking the time to read and comment

Excellent post.  We think volunteering is so important.  We have done so much in the past.  But, now we are spending a lot of time helping my elderly parents, in another area in OH, taking the parents out of hospitals and back to their home (at age 90 & 91), so they can remain in their home with in home services we find.

I have been helping with Meals on Wheels for years and I hope they can get more volunteers, because there is a great need in the community.

Great Post.  I believe in volunteering in my community.  And as far as my professional goals I do a certain about of pro bono work each year for non profits.

Volunteering makes us all better people.  What I am finding is that I am volunteering too much for one organization (Montgomery County Agricultural Fair, where I serve on the Board of Directors and and Co-Superintendent of the Home Arts Building and run the Decorated Christmas Tree contest and Hunt).  I need to branch out a little so that I don't get burned out.  Anyone else have that issue?

Grant,  Thank you for all you do.  Pro Bono work is sometimes a thankless job, but you obviously embrace the bigger meaning behind it

Sharon,  Sometimes I feel it's a selfish pleasure.  I'm wondering who gets the most out of it

Jamie,  Thanks friend.  It was a surprise....in a good way

Kunni,  You bet!  I have been chairing a committe at our church for 23 years.  I have put a time limit on the amount of service time for that group.  I promised two more years and then they need to find a replacement.  I think that learning to say "no", sometime, is integral to our capacity to be productive and fresh in our approach.  It took me a long time to learn, but, I'm getting better at it and enjoying other avenues more

We can all take time to help others.  It doesn't take much time relatively speaking but it is so gratifying.

Evelyn,  There are truly so many options.  You can choose to do a little...or..a lot

Steven,  Me too!  I was surprised to see all the responses in my inbox and just went with it.  I think the theme for the day was Volunteering and someone noticed my post.  In any case, it was great connecting with so many

Working in the VFW and American Legion, I know there are ALWAYS needs out there and the lack of Volunteers! Not only for help for the vetarans themselves, but for the other projects that we donate to.
