 Zumba Anyone? Camas Community Center.

Zumba Anyone? Camas Community CenterAre you ready to ditch the workout and join the party called Zumba?   I’ve been told by a fellow Realtor (Richard Yates) that I should consider Zumba as an alternative to running. Apparently, since I’ve recently fallen, (Oops, I did it again), actually twice this summer, (Help me I think I'm Falling), he thinks it might be a safer alternative.

However, I think that if you have problems keeping upright while putting one foot in front of the other, imagine how dangerous it could be by adding more complicated motions to the process?
No thank you, I think I’ll leave the Zumba to another fellow Realtor.  Apparently, Melinda Peterson loves to Zumba - all the time!

Fall and winter months make it more difficult to get motivated for outdoor exercise. Perhaps, it’s time for you to consider an indoor class such as Zumba? The Camas Community Center gives Camas and Washougal residents affordable year-round fitness, and Zumba is one of the many classes they offer.

Zumba Anyone? Camas Community CenterIf, like myself, you feel Zumba might not be your best choice
, consider a Yoga or Pilates class. Personally, I think Pilates is one of the best forms of exercise, and coupled with an aerobic program (such as running), you can develop a good level of fitness. Plus, I've never fallen while doing Pilates. Although, I suspect if I used a reformer, it's possible.

While plans (and hopes) are in place to eventually build a new facility, the Camas Community Center is currently operating out a 93 year old structure that once served as a school.
The building is located on SE 7th Avenue in downtown Camas. The Center is managed by the Camas Parks and Recreation Department.

If you're looking for a good way to stay fit once the rainy cool weather returns to the Camas-Washougal area, this is an affordable local resource. Zumba class anyone? You've got it, and many more classes to choose from, at the Camas Community Center.

Morning Debb-Yoga and pilates are good exercise no doubt. I think I will leave the zumba to the younger crowd. I enjoy walking and swimming myself. Although for now swimming will have to do as I have a pinched nerve in my toe and plantar fascitis. Yoga isn't as easy as it seems from what I have heard. Have fun whatever you choose. I hope whatever you did to injure yourself that you are doing better. Have a super Monday.

Debb, Zumba, Pilates and Yoga all sound great. I find it really difficult to schedule workouts outside my home, into my week. Working out on my treadmill, at home, works best for me.

Good morning Sunshine - having been a personal trainer for 8 years, I've tried it all. What I like about Zumba is it doesn't feel like a workout - it's just dancing up a storm for an hour. It's fun and easy to get the hang of. Anyone who works out should definitely give it a try - so much better than getting on an elliptical trainer for an hour, heck for more than 5 minutes....boring!

The first 5 mkinutes I tried Zumba, I thought it was a joke. At the 15 minute mark, I was on my hands and knees looking for the exit!

I love how you picniked the building.  Ended up not getting to look at that yesterday, but I will today.  If you are as physically fit as you appear to be, I don't think you'd have a problem with Zumba.  Have never done Pilates.  Ready :)

Anita - walking is a great form of exercise. Personally, I've been running for so many years that I miss that buzz I get from running - I'm walking right now - due to the silly injury - and I'm noticing how much I miss my running. But, I kind of wish I could accept walking, it's nearly a perfect form of exercise and easier on the joints. (and fingers, I've discovered.:) )

Sharon - I used to do Yoga, but prefer Pilates. Zumba seems like a very good workout, but I prefer more meditative type exercise - getting quiet and centered works for me.

Donna -as long as you're doing something. We gotta keep moving...:)

Hi there Kristine - well you are obviously in phenomenal shape - so, you're a great advocate for Zumba. I can see that it would take away the monotony of exercise. Glad that it works for you. Thanks for the visit.

Hi Rob, I don't doubt it's intensity or it's effectiveness. I've heard too many great things about it as a workout - and if you've seen Kristine's photos, you can tell it sure works for making a body beautiful. :)

Mimi - I just don't like loud exercise - never got into any of the aerobic classes because of that...I need to get centered when I exercise and I find that "solo" activity works best for me. Then, I'm ready to be 'social.' Pilates is wonderful and builds a strong core and lengthens muscles...I've always thought it was a great workout too. Surprisingly so...:)

Hi Debb -

Zumba?  A new one on me.  I'll Google it and then stick to riding my bike.  I had a bike wreck this summer so don't feel alone on falling and getting those boo- boos :)

Make it a great Monday and best regards from The Q

Hi Debb,

Nice tie in with discussion of different types of exercise and the Camas Community center offering residents a place to exercise. I use to be a runner but too many years of running with bad shoes many years ago lead me to have to have hip replacement surgery last December. I am not allowed to run anymore and I have to be content with walking. Zumba sounds like fun but my hip even now will not cooperate. Be careful with the running as I learned the hard way.

I was working with the physical therapist last week. According to him, if you have balance problems it means you need to strengthen your butt muscles.

I thought I was the only person left on the planet that had not tried Zumba!  Pilates and Spinning are the classes I enjoy and feel like I get the most out of.  Not sure I'll ever be much of a runner, but I sometimes get on a running kick too!  My daughter is running a half marathon in Las Vegas in December and in the middle of training for that.

Hi John - thanks for sharing all the color with us on your blog this morning. Great photos...you haven't heard of Zumba? Can't imagine the Q without a few Zumba classes...now that you've heard it, I'll bet you'll see them everywhere. It's a big deal.

Morning again Bob - I've always avoided the marathons, etc. for fear of injuries. I love to run so much that I do so in moderation - for fear of losing it. I run 4 or 5 times a week for about 4-5 miles...not a lot for a serious runner type. :)

I also buy new shoes at least four times a year - it really helps. I also run trails, which is why I fell this summer - not paying attention to the trail means trips over tree roots or rocks - lesson learned. Pay attention!

Jim - that makes sense. Balance isn't the issue for me - it's tripping over obstacles. :) Sad, I know.

Richard ~

Funny that you should mention Speed Walking, my husband and I both think it just looks crazy. I'm sure it's a form of fitness that "fits" someone, but not me. Therefore, I know I can promise you, NO Speed Walking for this woman.

Good for you and your recognition of the valuable characteristics of Yoga - it's a good centering piece for your many other exercise routines such as handball, ball juggling, hand walking, etc.

Have a productive week Richard. Namaste :)

Ann - Spinning is a heck of a workout and really intense with a good instructor.  That and Pilates would keep you in good shape... I'm glad to know of another woman who has not been bit by the Zumba Bug. :)

Joan ~ Go for it.  I could see you in Zumba - now that the lawn mowing season is winding down - you'll have to get in a workout somewhere. :)

I had never even seen Zumba until Mel showed us the video!  It does kind of look like fun, but pilates is a favorite of mine.  I think mixing it up is also key, so you don't get bored.  Ever tried P-90X, part of the beach body series?  I recently got into it and gotta tell you that the work outs can be killers but they're great for getting results and there's so much variety, it's never boring.

Gina - true story. Whatever works is what we need to be doing.

Hi Susan - Really? Pilates is a wonderful exercise. I have heard of P-90X, but never tried it - I am going to look into it for sure - especially after your recommendation.

Hey Debb - that's a mighty fun Localism post. I saw that our church is offering classes in the am and pm starting October 1st. I'm thinking about it. Not sure though. I'm kind of a loner with work outs so I occasionally run/walk. It's been so darn hot though I'm considering it.

I almost missed this post Debb (I've been traveling and I need to catch up on you again)... my favorite activity (well, one of them :)... ZUMBA!  I love the music, I love the moves and Kris is right, you don't feel like you're working out.  I'd like to see a few of our AR boys sport some ZUMBA moves :)
