Unclaimed Money: California Lottery Winnings go to local schools

Last week I wrote about two lottery tickets that were close to $300,000 each that had been unclaimed at the time of the writing.

The way California works is that if there is a lottery ticket that goes unclaimed then it goes into a fund for California schools.

Well, someone purchase a ticket to Mega Millions and won $297,525.  The problem with this is that the person will never see any of that money because they did not claim their winnings by the allotted time.  This particular ticket expired September 19.

Lottery winners in California have 180 days to claim the cash they have won from their lottery ticket.  That's 6 months!  For 6 months someone could have really changed their lives (if not permantly, then at least for a little while).

Two other major winners in Orange County, CA have not come forward to claim their cash as of yet either.  One of them for $178,790! Whoever this person is, they have until 5:00 pm, October 17 to come forward.

The other ticket is worth $298,154 and that person still has time since it was purchased earlier this month.

Millions of dollars go unclaimed each year from lottery winnings.  One of the biggest reasons is that someone picks up a scratch off ticket while visiting and then forgets about it.

Search your pockets and dressers for any tickets that you may have and take a few minutes to check and see if you have any extra cash that you have won.

Ouch - I wouldn't want to know if I had won but not claimed it in time.  I'm so glad to hear, though, that the schools are the beneficiary.
