Chateau Morisette Winery - Floyd County VA

By
Real Estate Agent with Commonwealth LLC Realtors

Although I am a primarily a Henry County and Martinsville agent, I also serve parts of Patrick and Floyd County, its were I am originally from and my family was raised all along the mountains so they are a big part of my heart and history.

One place of interest is Chateau Morisette Winery located in Floyd VA.

Chateau Morisette is located in a spectacular natural setting in rural Floyd County. From a ‘small reality,' they are now one of the largest wineries in Virginia. Nationally, Virginia is ranked tenth in commercial grape production and grape bearing acreage. The Virginia Commercial Grape Statistical Report shows 4,120 tons produced from 1,730 bearing acres.

Our location on the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway has helped introduce thousands of visitors to premier Virginia wines. The restaurant and winery are open year round and special events are held throughout the year. Chateau Morisette is both a relaxing and exciting experience for anyone who enjoys fine wine, good food and natural surroundings. It has become one of Southwest Virginia's premier destination points.

Hello-

My name is Eric Hardaway, and I am a grauate student in the planning
program at Clemson University in SC. We recently visited the Rocky Knob
area and Chateau Morrisette, and are working on a regional planning project in conjunction with
Virg Tech. My specific focus is Aspect within a group whose focus is
topography. I am particularly focused on aspect in regards to viticulture for wine production in VA...

I have chosen to focus on grapes.. particularly the cultivation of grapes
for wine production. I have a few questions about your operation, and I
would greatly appreciate any help that you could provide. I have perfomed
significant research on winery site selection and the factors that play a
significant role in the production of high quality wine grapes. Chateau
Morrisette seems to be outside of the area that my research has shown is
optimal for grape production concerning wine, but I really enjoyed the
wines I tried during my visit... I realize you import some of your grapes,
but I know you grow your own too.

Question 1: What is the elevation of your vineyards on-site, and if the
info is readily available, if you can provide the general aspect, slope,
and other general requirements you see as important for good wine grapes
in this region.

Question 2: Which area do you import your grapes from?

What seems to be your best and most demanded wine grape in the region? If
there is any other general info you can provide it would be greatly
appreciated. I realize wine production is really kind of an agricultural
anomoly and that soil nutrient levels are not really that important...But
what do you consider to be the most important aspects for successful wine
grape production in the region you thrive in?

I know this is kind of an odd email, but I really enjoyed your winery and
am curious to see what you have to say. thank you for your time. my email is ehardaw@clemson.edu if you would respond you will be my hero!!!
I"ve done alot of research, but would be nice to get some input from someone who knows the region. My paper/presentation are due Oct 9..
Have a great day..
Sincerely-

Eric Hardaway
