"Bold Expressions" quilt collection
at Mingei International Museum

I finally got to see the "Bold Expressions" quilt collection at the Mingei International museum. I had seen pictures of it, but as with just about anything in life, pictures rarely do justice.

There are more than fifty quilts on display through November 6, 2011, featuring African-American quilts from the American South. The quilts were crafted from common materials available at the time, such as flour sacks, blue jeans, work clothes, you name it. They span the period from 1910 to the 1970s, and are from the collection of Corrine Riley who has been collecting quilts for 35 years.

These are not your everyday quilts, and the asymmetry and bold colors might be shocking to those of us used to the $99 mass-produced quilts from Sears that last for about five years, less if you have a cat.

Mingei International Museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and is located at 1439 El Prado in Balboa Park.

Cost to get in is just $8 for adults, and while you're there, check out the waving cats, too, which will be my next post.

After your visit to the Mingei International Museum, if you'd like to explore San Diego and look for your new home, just give me a call!

They are beautiful, Jim. I posted a local quilt exhibit a few weeks back and I really enjoyed seeing this one too.

If there is one thing I wish I had more time for it's crafts like quilting, sewing and so forth.  I love this kind of thing.

Hi JIm - what a very cool display and I would love to see them. I remember being in Pennsylvania and seeing the Amish quilts - which are beautiful.

Beautiful quilts Jim. I know something about quilts, but the Amish quilts are never this bright. I love the beauty and the brightness.

I'm glad to see you promoting a quilt show!  I particularly liked the quilt in the 3rd picture.  I have never seen that exact pattern.  I believe the circular block in it is a spiderweb block.  I have started buying quilts at yard sales and I picked up a spiderweb block quilt this summer.  I haven't added it to my photo album yet, but here are my other quilts
