Students in the San Dieguito Union High School District can now catch up or get ahead with classes though an online program being expanded at the distric's four high schools. The district introduced the computer-based, independent study classes in summer 2010 with about 100 juniors and seniors who had fallen behind on their studies.
This year, there are about 700 students taking the self-paced which use online software called Plato Learning. Most are working to make up classes they had failed. After two summers working out the kinks, the district was ready to expand the online offerings but decided to move slowly.
Students at Canyon Crest Academy and San Dieguito Academy can only take the online courses to make up classes they have failed. However, those at La Costa Canyon and Torrey pines high schools can take the classes to get ahead or free up time in their schedule. The district decided to start the program that way because the district's two academies offer student more opportunities to take elective and additional classes than La Costa Canyon and Torrey Pines do. We wanted to start small enough where we could manage it support it and learn. At some point the district might add honors or Advance Placement classes to the online courses.
