Protection from Brazen Coyotes

This article was originally written by Leolinda Bowers in Sun City West, Arizona about Coyote invasions.  This advice applies to coyotes in Oregon too!  They have been coming in close to my neighbors too here in South Salem near Turner Oregon lately.  Lots of cats have gone missing.  I am not missing any chickens or cats personally, probably because they keep eating the neighbors animals!

Brazen Coyotes

Sun City Grand homeowners’ association sent an email release on September 26, 2011 from Mitzi Mills Executive Director Sun City Grand. Whether you live in Sun City, Sun City West, Arizona Traditions, Corte Bella, Sun City Grand or in Surprise, these are some excellent tips:

Ø      Don’t leave small children or pets unattended in the outdoors. Arizona - Coyote Coyotes have been spotted in virtually every neighborhood in Sun City Grand, as well as the golf course and desert areas surrounding us.

Ø      When walking your pet never use a leash over 6 feet long

Ø      If a coyote approaches you – don’t run, be as big, as mean and as loud as possible. Shout at the coyote.

Ø      Never feed coyotes.  Coyotes that are fed by people lose their fear of humans and develop a territorial attitude that may lead to aggressive behavior.  As coyotes become braver and braver they get closer and closer to homes.

Ø      Don’t give coyote’s access to garbage.  Make sure garbage can lids are securely down.

Ø      Prevent access to fruit.  If you have fruit trees keep fruit picked up from the ground.  If your neighbor has fruit trees and is away or does not keep the fruit cleaned up let us know.

Ø      Feed dogs and cats indoors.  Do not leave water or food dishes for your animals outdoors.

Ø      Don’t feed feral cats or birds. Coyotes prey on feral cats as well as the food you leave out, do not encourage the feral cats to remain in the area by feeding them.  Coyotes are also attracted by the birds and rodents that eat from bird feeders.

Ø      Throw rocks at the coyote.  If a coyote approaches to an uncomfortable distance, throw rocks or other objects at the coyote.

Ø      If approached by a coyote make loud noises. Hazing methods can be used to discourage coyotes from hanging around Sun City Grand.  These methods should be used EVERY time you see a coyote in your yard or in your neighbor’s yard or while you are in the common areas.  Studies show that repeated hazing works to change the behavior of the coyote over time.  Try these proven hazing methods:

Ø          Wave arms and yell loudly at and in the direction of the coyote

Ø          Carry a squirt bottle full of ammonia and spray it at or on the coyote

Ø          Shake a can full of rocks or pennies

Ø          Squirt the Coyote with your garden hose

Ø          Bang pans together

Ø          Carry and use air horns or whistles

Whenever I take my dog out, I am right there. I would never want to witness any animal being attacked by a coyote; I’m sure that it’s not a positive experience.
