October is National Breast Cancer Month.  Having faced this battle more than once, I am very supportive of any initiative which promotes education, prevention and ultimately a cure.

  • I'm reblogging a blog Sally and David Hanson posted this evening.  Let's see as 200K strong we can't reach out to clients, friends, family, coworkers and social acquaintances.
  • If we each reach out to just one person who is diagnosed early - we've saved 200,000 lives.

My best piece of advice for anyone - man or woman facing this disease - is to seek out the highest level of competent care available.  The latest cutting edge technology is available at teaching hospitals and universities.  It is often less expensive than being treated locally.  Most woman believe that breast cancer is breast cancer and any Oncologist or surgeon can treat it.  NOT SO!

  • There are major teaching hospitals in nearly every state.  Johns Hopkins, Mass Gen, Sloan Kettering, Mayo Clinic, Shands, University of Miami, Duke University, University of Virginia, Georgetown University to name a few which come to mind.

You only have one life - one time to make the right decisions - be proactive in your treatment plan and ask for all the options available.  Don't stick your head in the sand and blindly trust a local practitioner.

Learn about the variety of cancer you have.  Know if it is estrogen sensitive, the growth rate and the staging. Read up on it and the best treatment options for a successful outcome. Be involved in every step of your treatment program.

Comments on this blog are disabled.  If you are newly diagnosed, in treatment or need someone to listen who felt those icy fingers at 3am in the morning - feel free to email me privately.

If you don't know a friend, neighbor or relative who has had and hopefully won, the fight against breast cancer...you must be living on some other planet.  We know many people...most who have won the battle and continue to strengthen the efforts to bring more awareness, more early detection, advancing treatment and finding a cure for this disease that strikes far too many people...both men and women throughout the world.

Cosmo J. Hanson   Cosmo,(our older cat/son) gets the credit for helping us Pay it Forward for this cause....and developing more awareness. He only likes Fancy Feast Chunky Chicken...not tuna and chicken, not chicken with gravy or cheese....Chunky chicken...and he is not alone so if you don't get to the store when it has been delivered...you find yourself sharing your own plate with Cosmo who will ...if he has to ...eat people food of certain varieties.  Off to Walmart to raid their supply since we were down to the last couple cans....not quite a case in stock but it will hold us over to the next delivery.

When I entered the store I found a gorgeous display of small pink cala lily plants with the well known pink ribbon everyone associates with Breast Cancer and the Susan Komen logo on the outer wrapping. From the everything-happens-for-a-reason school....I bought a plant and delivered it to one of our short sale sellers who was having a particularly difficult time dealing with having to short sale the house she had called home for a couple of decades.  The flowers are beautiful....almost artificial in appearance with each bloom a perfection of Mother Nature's own creation.   I wished silently for them all to disappear in people's carts as a portion of the profit goes to fight breast cancer.  October is Breast Cancer Awareness month....and for each transaction we close, and each listing we take, we are going to do something to help elevate awareness and discover a cure.  There are so many ways that we can help.Pink Calla Lily  Buying these flowers and giving them to people is just one way and there are others as well....walks and runs that are being held in your community. Cut a thons that may be hostessed by your local beauty salon....Pink items you can purchase from many, many places to help stop this horrible disease.

What if YOU as an active and caring member of Active Rain joined us in helping spread this awareness during the month of October? What  great and powerful good we can accomplish....

Join us....do what you can....make the world a better place, be thankful for your good health and help others to enjoy it as well..Help fight the battle against breast cancer...one bloom...one race, one step at a time.
