When customers become friends

By
Real Estate Agent with Endless Summer Realty

I am saddened this morning as at 5am I received a phone call from my friend's sister that her husband passed away this morning. This friend was and still is a good customer of mine. She, through another Realtor many years ago, bought one of my listings. We got to know each other and years later she listed 2 of her properties with me. In the interim, we became great friends.

Like a sister that I never had, we shared secrets and laughed about funny things. We celebrated our children's successes and cried over their short comings. Last week her husband had to have a serious surgery, The Whipple Surgery, the same one that Steve Jobs had last year. He put this off for some time and enjoyed his 60th birthday before going into surgery on Wednesday. I spent 14 hours at the hospital with her while we waited for the outcome. It was joyous news to know that he made it through. We then celebrated his making it through the next 24 hours and then 48 hours, after the weekend, we felt that we were home safely. Then, he passed. She was by his side.

As I sat with her in the hospital, I thought of all the great friends that I have. I would have to say that almost 100% are past and current customers. I love my job and love the Real Estate industry, but I have to say that the greatest reward of all is the friendships that I have made through my occupation. I have been so fortunate to have met the nicest, most sincere and loving people. I know we are in a troubled economy and that life is harder for everyone, but as a Realtor, I am proud to say that even though life is not easy, life is good, and God is great, and I am thankful for every minute that I am here and for all the friends that have entered my life through my work.

We will miss Steve T. and my prayers are with him in heaven, but I am here for his family and thank God for putting them in my life.

Sorry to hear about your loss! It is true though. We are in a people business, not a house business and we tend to meet a lot of great people over time. Building and maintaining relationships in this business can be more beneficial than just making a sale. I have also met customers who have become friends and I would have never met them if I wasn't in real estate. Stay stong and I"m sure she appreciates having you in her life.

Diane - it is always sad to lose a friend.  The one thing that shines brightly in this post is that YOU have been such a great friend.  I know you will continue to be there for your friend as she adjusts to the many changes and her her loss at losing her husband.  Yes, it is great when clients become good friends.

Hi Diane,
I'm so sorry to hear about your lost.
Even though it may be difficult, try to stay strong for our friend.
The good thing is that you’re not only a Realtor, but a good friend who will lend a shoulder for someone to cry on.
Keep up the good work!

Diane,

So sorry to hear about your friend's loss.  I, too, have developed a close relationship with some of my clients.  One of them actually considers me his friend, not his real estate agent, although he will refer business my way.  I believe in building relationships with customers, not treating them as a once and done transaction.  After all, consumers like to work with those they trust.
