Eastern Market is  the oldest farmers market in Washington, DC. Opening its doors in 1873, Eastern Market has offers Washingtonians fresh produce, fresh meats and seafood, flowers as well as clothes and knick knacks for the house.

Located almost in the center of Capitol Hill, Eastern Market is a favorite of residents during the week and especially on weekend.  The market has a indoor section that features bakers, food vendors that serve all types of food; butchers and seafood.  Outside local artist showcase their latest artwork, vendors sell vintage clothes, apparel, magazines, books and other products.  There is a real community atmosphere and on the weekends the place is jammed packed with families and people looking a good deal.

Eastern Market suffered a major fire in 2007 that closed the market for nearly 2 years. The structure was so outdated that an electrical fire broke out.  After a renovation the new market was opened in 2009.  The new building is energy efficient and has many upgrades.

If you happen upon Eastern Market during your trip to Washington, DC you will be in for a real treat.  Here's more information on the Eastern Market
