Insulation and Windows

Education & Training with Rowlett Real Estate School

The  measure of the effectiveness of insulation is its resistance to heat flow, or R-value.
The higher the R-value, the better the energy efficiency. Insulation is material applied to exterior walls and ceilings to protect the interior from heat loss. Insulation materials include;

  • Batt and blanket (fiberglass)
  • Loose fill (blown cellulose)
  • Foam insulation
  • Rigid board insulation

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) establishes the minimum recommended R-values specific to a local areas.
Many existing homes have single pane windows.  In a well insulated structure, 20% to 50% of the total energy loss typically occurs through and around these windows. Thermal pane or storm windows are an energy efficient alternative to single pane windows. Thermal windows are double pane windows with air space that acts as insulation. Thermal windows reduce heating and cooling costs

Hi Captain, great info, and if you happen to see the U factor on window stickers it is the inverse value of R, that is U=1/R
