East Rock Park-A New Haven Landmark
A favorite outdoor recreation destination and tourist spot for residents and visitors of the Greater New Haven area is East Rock which spans the towns of New Haven and Hamden.
The magnificent red basalt cliffs of East Rock were formed about 200 million years ago and at its highest point of 366 feet offers spectacular views of the City of New Haven, Mill River, Quinnipiac River, Long Island Sound and Long Island.
East Rock is the principal feature located within the 425 acre East Rock Park owned by the City Of New Haven and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. The city manages the park and maintains a scenic seasonal, winding road where you can drive your automobile to the summit and is also accesible by foot or bicycle too.
At the top of the summit of East Rock is the Angel of Peace overlooking the City of New Haven hand raised with an olive branch and holding a wreath as an enduring symbol of hope, peace and harmony.
The angel sits atop the Soldiers and Sailors' Monument in honor of the residents of New Haven who gave their lives in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War and the Civil War.
Construction began on the monument on June 17, 1886 with its first dedication ceremonyheld one year later on June 17, 1887. It is estimated that approximately 175,000 people lined the streets of New Haven to watch a parade of 20,000 march up to the summit. and included men, women, children and a number of miitary divisions.
There was live music, fireworks and speeches. Guests of honor at the ceremony were two heroes of the Civil War General Phillip Henry Sheridan and General William Tecumseh Sherman. It has been rededicated twice in Septmeber 1987 and October 2010 after undergoing extensive restoration to its interior and exterior and is currently under rehabilitation today.
People who visit East Rock Park are permitted to hike, bike, picnic, bird watching, walk their dogs and go snowshoeing or cross-country skiing during the winter. There are playgrounds, tennis courts, basketball courts, baseball, football and soccer fields located at the base of East Rock making it a wonderful destination for outdoor recreation.
