Williamson County residents will be happy to know that County Commissioners recently voted to decrease the property tax rate by approximately 0.002312 per $100 in assessed value. The decrease will make the 2011–12 adopted tax rate 0.487687 per $100 in assessed value. The decrease in the property tax rate will help offset the increase being seen in property values in the area. It is estimated that Williamson County residents will end up paying about the same in taxes in 2012 as they did in 2011.
The county has also cut $2.6 million from the proposed fiscal year 2012 budget. Precinct 3 Commissioner Cynthia Long said, “It’s nobody’s ideal budget. It doesn’t have everything in it or out of it that any of us want, but I think from the work we did last week and previous months, we got to a place where we could have a balanced budget, and that took a lot of hard work from a lot of folks.” Tightening the budget can be a painful process but proved useful for the county. Originally, commissioners were considering cutting over $200,000 towards public assistance services, but in the end, after much debate, the cut was only $74,600. It is difficult when the budget has grown annually, but the population in the county has only grown by 70 percent in the last decade.
