I love this idea. I saw my brother in law making labels for his basement valves the other day and thought what a great idea to make these for my clients! Not only are they a great idea to keep you organized in my mind they are a necessity. When going to building inspections it is not uncommon for the buyer to have no idea how to find the water main, gas and other very important valves.
Everyone in your home should know how to shut off water to your home if there is an emergency. In the event of an emergency, such as an earthquake or an unexpected winter freeze, you will want to turn off the water supply to your home as soon as possible to prevent water damage to your property. You may want to attach a label to your house valve for quick identification (so that you can find it even in the dark). Please take a few minutes during daylight hours to locate and learn how to operate your house valve.
Dropping temperatures can cause pipes to freeze and burst. If you label the main shutoff valves ahead of time, you’ll know exactly which ones to turn off to avert flooding. Print the name of the water source on a peel-off label (or use a personal label maker). Affix the labels to copper plant tags, and wrap them around the appropriate pipes.
