Record Number Of Hispanic Children Living In Poverty
By: Armando Trull, WAMU 88.5 News
“For the first time since these statistics have been gathered, there are more Hispanic children in America living in poverty than white children: 6.1 million Latinos compared to 5 million whites. The figures, from a Pew Hispanic Center report released Sept. 28, also show 4.4 million black children living in poverty.
In the D.C. area, about 130,000 young people live in poverty, with blacks accounting for half of those numbers and Hispanics about a quarter, but moving up quickly. That number amounts to nearly 40,000 youngsters in the D.C. region. Thirty percent of poor children in Prince George's County are Latino, about the same number as in Montgomery County, Fairfax and Prince William. It’s even worse in Arlington County, where 40 percent of poor kids are Hispanic.”
To me, these figures are staggering. Montgomery County, Maryland is one of the richest counties in the country. What does the future hold for these 130,000 children and their families in the DC Metro area?
