Record Number Of Hispanic Children Living In Poverty

By: Armando Trull, WAMU 88.5 News

“For the first time since these statistics have been gathered, there are more Hispanic children in America living in poverty than white children: 6.1 million Latinos compared to 5 million whites. The figures, from a Pew Hispanic Center report released Sept. 28, also show 4.4 million black children living in poverty.

In the D.C. area, about 130,000 young people live in poverty, with blacks accounting for half of those numbers and Hispanics about a quarter, but moving up quickly. That number amounts to nearly 40,000 youngsters in the D.C. region. Thirty percent of poor children in Prince George's County are Latino, about the same number as in Montgomery County, Fairfax and Prince William. It’s even worse in Arlington County, where 40 percent of poor kids are Hispanic.”

To me, these figures are staggering.  Montgomery County, Maryland is one of the richest counties in the country.  What does the future hold for these 130,000 children and their families in the DC Metro area?

Roy,

Those are really sad statistics; what can someone do? Then remember that the Latino's are taking all of the American people's jobs. This is something near and dear to my heart as I am Latina and thankfully have a good education and am providing for my children to have one as well. That is so sad. Are there programs out there to help these people?

Roy,  these are sad statistics.  I am seeing similar stats for other ethic groups and small towns in PA, OH and NY.  Tough times ahead.

Roy, it's just wrong for ANY child to have to live in poverty - black, white, brown, purple, pink, or whatever! May the Lord stir our hearts to reach out to help these children!

Roy,

My heart bleeds for the children of all nationalities. I was at a presentation a few weeks ago. The presenter said that the National demographics show Hispanics is the largest population, followed by Asians, then Blacks, and in the bottom of the bar charts, barely above the line is Caucasians. The fact that we have lots of mixed races accounts for unknown numbers and Muslems don't put themselves into any category.

With the number of people unemployed, and the way our world has changed, there's too many people living in poverty for all races. My heart goes out to the children who ultimately suffer because of our economy and lack of good education in many areas of the United States.

Good Saturday morning to all.  For those that are seeking a worthwhile cause, creating solutions for families in poverty is noble work.  If this post provides the inspiration to help one child, it will be successful.  What can you do to help one child?

In our community, many have provided backpacks and supplies for students. Many schools have breakfast and lunch programs for needy children. There is much more that could be done.
