U locked me out of my home

By
Real Estate Agent with BlueCoast Realty Corporation

U locked me out of my home read the text message following the phone call I saw trying to come through while I was on another call.

I saw who sent it and guessed the situation.  It’s was a seller out of town for the weekend now returned on Monday afternoon.

No, I didn’t lock you out of your home!  But, on Saturday, I drove 20 miles each way to turn on lights in your home to set the stage for a second showing.  When I drove back and turned off the lights, I also checked the garage interior door and it was locked.

Now, I'm learning the hard way that this seller travels without a key to her own home relying on the garage door opener for access.  This has happened before with a different seller.  In that case, she taped a note on the door requesting that it not be locked.  Unfortunately, that note didn’t help much at all so I've received this type of message before.

No, I didn’t lock the door.  That was the conscientious Buyer’s agent after the second showing.

So, today, I will drive 20 miles there and 20 miles back to get you in your home.  My only request is that you please carry a key becasue, next time, I might not be able to do this at your convenience and neither of us wants you to be in this situation again.

This is a great reminder about one of the items to discuss during the listing paperwork signing.

Beverly, I would suggest that you move this post to members only. Your seller might otherwise see it.

Is that the problem Jennifer, a lack of common sense?  Perhaps Realtors have an abundance of it.  If so and we could bottle it, that would be lovely!

I can't imagine that the seller doesn't have a key to their home, however, a lesson learned,,definitely something to discuss during the listing process.

Thank you for sharing your key story.  We just had the same thing happen to us last week.  I was 45 minutes away so a dear Friend/Realtor went and let them into their home.

Ronald, Every word is true and right behind your comment same one from Maggie Mcfarland of Pearland
TX with a similar story

Maggie, thank you for giving me credibility.  Yes, this is just another one of those things we do no one ever imagines would be part of our Job description.  Actually, I'm sure it isn't part of our job description and what would we do without our agent friends.

My question is why this seller not have a key to access their property regardless of the door being locked or not. Hmmmm

Since I have been locked out of my own home because I did not carry a key - LOL - I learned this lesson the hard way. Have not thought to point it out to a seller, though...excellent advice!
