How About a Little Prairie Justice?

By
Real Estate Agent with Prudential California Realty

The recent Southern California fires had a number of causes; a long drought, a particularly fierce Santa Ana wind that lasted longer than usual, and a few idiot yahoos who thought they'd express their inner anger at society by running around starting fires at the worst possible time.

Did these arsonists crave attention?  Was this a cry for help?  Did they enjoy watching the suffering they causCowboy sheriffed?  Did they compare notes beforehand?

Spray bottleSo I've been wondering; why tie up the justice system and take up space in a jail cell with these arsonists?   Sometimes a little "prairie justice" just makes more sense.  When we catch arsonists in the act, as we did, why don't we just immediately give them an opportunity to pitch in and help fix the problem they created?  After all, the firefighters need all the help they can get.  Let's hand the arsonists a shovel and a spray bottle full of water and drop them off in the midst of the burn area.  Then we'll show them what it means to cry for help.

OK, I know that sounds bitter and mean.  My point is that I've heard a lot of commentary on the news about "what went wrong" about how the fires were handled.  It doesn't seem fair that there is so much coverage of politicians blaming each other but so far I haven't heard much about the arsonists they've arrested.  Hmmm . . .

And really, we can't sue the wind.

You know the largest terror group in the US is a group call ELF, Enviromental Liberal Fighters or something like that. They burn homes in new construction areas and so on.  They are listed on the FBI Website why is it we never hear about them.

Oh yes.  Those idiot yahoos.  They burned a condo project in the University Town Center area of La Jolla.  I understand they've caught at least one of them, but I really don't know much more than that.  I can't figure out how they think they are helping the environment by burning a huge structure, which pollutes the air, and then causes the builder to go out and buy more lumber and steel.  Big shrug.

Sharon,  I just can't understand why anyone would be out to hurt and destroy.  They have to be very sick mentally,  to do that.  I like your idea about having them pitch in.  Not cruel at all!!

Roberta - I feel the same way.  I am completely bewildered by destructive people.  99% of us are trying so hard to do good, or at least not do bad.  Let's give the bad guys a chance to repent and repair!  Hey, there's no point in trying to squeeze money damages out of an arson suspect, right?

I like your solution here, Sharon.  Let them "feel the burn" a little bit themselves.

Sharon- I have always thought the punishment should fit the crime. Instead of taking up useless time in prison, put them to work cleaning up the mess they made, replanting trees, rebuilding houses, etc. That should keep them busy for a long long time. They can sleep at night in a jail and get to work in the morning! Katerina

Katerina - In all seriousness, I think your solution truly makes sense, and is much less likely to invoke the wrath of the ACLU than my first idea.  Better to have them planting trees than making license plates.  It's interesting to note that a good portion of those working the firelines were actually prisoners!  I felt bad having written that post, especially when they announced last night that one of the firestarters was a kid playing with matches.  I guess you have to leave it to the justice system and pray for judges that choose to administer justice in an appropriate manner.

Sharon, Great idea but unfortunately the public and politicians would think that is inhumane treatment.  Personally, I think the should have to 'feel the burn'......

I think it sounds rather just. Of course, you should hear what I think should be done to child molesters!

I remember when several houses near my mom in Phoenix were burned down in the middle of the night.  All of the houses were under construction at the time, but my mom was still nervous!  I can't remember who they arrested.  Was it one of the enviornmental groups?
