Margaret my esteemed colleague suggested I do a piggy back blog (sort of) on her subject of driving while texting. New Law in Maryland..No Texting....No Emailing While Driving! We Need to Get the Word Out! http://actvra.in/kCr caused me to comment as follows..

TEXTER SIGHTED AHEAD

When someone driving in front of you slows down or does the side to side car sway, you know it someone who is learning to text and drive or it is someone that is no good at it. Perhaps in time this person may or may not perfect their new found belief..Meanwhile, we are now all entering into the statistical mode of driving while distracted where deaths are being reported

IT CAN BE DONE WITH PRACTICE

The more experienced can chew gum and walk no problem meaning that you can text while driving. I am not advocating it. In fact, practicing that while at the helm of something that weighs in between 3000 to 4000 pounds is not wise...but more like a death wish...

TARGET PRACTICE

Think about going to a gun range to practice and having a loaded weapon handled incorrectly. Not only would everyone there be concerned, but you would be in danger as well. It is not a good place to practice learning curve methods. There is only one acceptable way of visiting target ranges. So it is with driving.

RUSSIAN ROULETTE

Supposing you managed to answer a text and had a few near misses? Was it worth it? What kind of business are you in that requires that type of risk? If you are doing it for fun, then I question your thinking process. You are either immature or reckless. Neither one is appealing when lives are involved

GOOGLE CAR CRASHES

Nothing is more sobering that seeing a crash after math. The car we take for granted every day when we get in it becomes an accordion. Some require can openers to enter or the famous jaws of life that firemen use. Anything inside is thrown around and either dead or maimed for life

WANNA PLAY CHICKEN?

Texting while driving is a form of playing chicken with yourself. Assuming you survive a mishap but manage to kill or injure someone, you will see how nothing you say will bring them back to normal or comfort those that bear the loss of your irresponsible thinking...Play this type of chicken and you lay a big regrettable for the rest of your life egg

This post is so true. Thanks for this Richie. I admit I am/was horrible at doing this and have taken steps to really improve. My worst ever was during an end of month I was heading to an appt took an emergency call from title for a closing going on and a document the lender had at least twice was asked for again before docs were to release. . I had to pull over while talking on the phone to open my laptop, create a hot spot with my phone connect to the web locate the document asked for attach to an email and send it over. ALL WHILE ON THE ROAD! Better on the berm than on the main road but regardless we all do way too much and when operating a vehicle that should be the ONLY thing happening.

Richie, there are no "do overs" when the unthinkable happens.  Cell phone use, whether talking or texting while driving is a difficult task for many yet they'll continue.  The driving becomes secondary.  Next time you're at a fairly good sized interesection make note of how many people are on their phone doing something.  It's astounding to me that more people aren't irate about "distracted drivers", they're everywhere!

Kevin...We are entering a stage of life where people are staring at screens and not at each other. Those that live by the phone, will die by the phone...if they text while driving. I hope this isn't one of those lessons that we learn after the fact...pretty costly and devastating. Your comment of "do over" says it all Kevin my fine friend

Good Morning Richie, I have to admit that I would have a very difficult time texting and driving or doing anything else.  They must be out of their mind!
