The most qualified authority to determine your housing needs?

By
Industry Observer

There are some self-proclaimed experts on housing, most falling into two groups.  First, the journalism majors who just read everything they could find in Wikipedia on real estate, or at least all they could find in twenty minutes.  Housing is a trendy topic, and the journalists always strive for popularity.  You definitely know more about yourself and what will best improve your future lifestyle than that journalism major armed with twenty minutes of generic research.  The amount of time they have resided outside their parents' home or a college dorm can often be measured in weeks or months, not years or decades.

The second group is landlords.  Yes, the people who benefit from renters the most will tell you how great it is to rent.  They are correct, but it's great to rent out property to tenants who support their landlord's lifestyle.  You've gotta love them, and you may want to become one someday.  Landlords are just not the best place to look for advice about whether you should continue renting or own your own home.

The only person who can answer the question of whether you should buy a home is yourself.  If you want to continue to live in the world of bland, with no individualized decor, less privacy, and no dog, maybe renting will work for you.  If you're happy to make a mortgage payment every month - for someone else's mortgage, maybe renting will work for you.  If you're happy to be guaranteed that your payments will probably increase, maybe as often as yearly, maybe renting will work for you.  It worked quite well for Ralph Kramden.

If you would like some help sorting out whether you are able to upgrade your lifestyle, just call or email to arrange a convenient time for a home buying orientation and feasibility session.  It takes about ninety minutes, it costs nothing, and it will prepare you to make an informed decision about your future success.

This is great Mike - People think its "cool" to rent right now.  In many ways this is just as reckless as people buying McMansions by the dozen in 2005.  We need balance.  Renting only makes the landlord rich!
