Every October we are awash in PINK for Breast Cancer Awareness month (note I am not belittling BC awareness, I am an 8-year survivor), but few people realize October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
- One in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime.1
- An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year.2
- 85% of domestic violence victims are women.3
- Historically, females have been most often victimized by someone they knew.4
- Females who are 20-24 years of age are at the greatest risk of nonfatal intimate partner violence.5
- Most cases of domestic violence are never reported to the police.6

Domestic violence does not care about age, economic status, race, religion, or educational background. Nor is it limited to physical abuse, but encompasses emotional and economic abuse, as well. Domestic violence is about one thing --dominance and control.
Domestic violence has a far-reaching arm. It has a lasting impact on children, who may also be abused by the perpetrator. The economic impact to businesses is in the billions of dollars each year, due to things like reduced production, loss of time by an employee seeking medical attention, increased security.
National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) has a program where you can donate your used cell phones. I printed out a label and mailed off 3 no-longer used cell phones today.
Perhaps you would like to volunteer at a shelter for Domestic Violence. Donate some clothes.
Will you do your part this October for Domestic Violence Awareness Month? Will you wear a purple ribbon on your pink shirt? WILL YOU?
