My wife Renae and I started a tradition about 10 years ago that has now grown in to an annual International Gourmet Gala. Ok, that may be stretching it just a tad but for those of us who participate it has become a fun time that we look forward to with our friends and family.
As a Home Inspector in Mesa Arizona one of the safety aspects of my job is to check the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in the homes that I inspect. I make it a specific point to discuss these with my clients. The average smoke detector lasts from 7 to 10 years. If a home is in a dusty environment (on a dirt road for example) then the life span will be on the shorter end of the spectrum. I recommend replacing all of the smoke detectors in a home that is 7 years or older if the age of the smoke detectors is unknown. It’s a good idea to write the date that you replaced the detector on the inside of the battery cover for future reference.
I also suggest that each smoke detector is tested every month, and that the batteries are replaced at least once if not twice a year. Replacing the batteries gives you peace of mind knowing that you and your family have added protection should a fire start in your home. And you have the added bonus comfort factor knowing that the smoke detectors won’t start “chirping” at 2:15 on a cold, dark winter morning and wake you from that deep sleep that you were enjoying. In addition I remind my clients that they are moving in to a new home and one of the first things they should do is to formulate and practice an escape plan. This is a new environment for their family so they should become familiar with their surroundings the first day they move in. I also suggest purchasing and learning the proper use of fire extinguishers. (Note: Fire Extinguishers make great house warming and/or Realtor “Thank You” gifts!)
I recommend to my clients that the perfect time to change the batteries is on the weekend that Daylight Saving time starts or ends in November or March. It’s a great way to remember to change the batteries because it gives you the perfect excuse for a party! Most smoke detectors are installed way up high on the walls or on the ceilings which requires the use of a ladder. And someone should be holding that ladder when you climb up to change the batteries – Safety First! Why not invite a few friends over and make the battery replacement a gourmet event where you cook the main course and everyone brings a side dish? Take advantage of your friend’s help and change all of the batteries in all of your smoke detectors right when everyone arrives. Then you have the rest of the evening to crack open the beverage of your choice and enjoy good food and company!
Daylight Saving time falls back Saturday November 5th so you have plenty of time to plan this year’s event. Call or email your friends in the next few days to invite them over and decide on your menu etc. I know that we don’t change our clocks here in Arizona but it is still the perfect weekend to have your battery changing party!
I will share a recipe or two in my next blog. I encourage you to plan a battery changing party of your own because it is a great excuse to A) change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to keep your family safe and B) get together with good friends for a fun night of great food and conversation. Cheers!
