All Hail the Turkey! Destroyer of the Market!

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Classic Property Management

Ahhh...the holidays.  Is there anything more enjoyable and satisfying about the holiday season than porking out on a bunch of turkey, stuffing, and pie?  I think not.  Ladies and Gentlemen, let me introduce you to a good friend of mine: Tryptophan.

I am sure that the vast majority of you are aware of this friend even if you have never been formally introduced.  You see, tryptophan is an amino acid found in turkey that is responsible for a rise in the level of serotonin, the chemical that causes relaxation and sleep.  In the past few years there has been some debate about how much tryptophan you actually have to consume to create a noticeable change, but the fact remains that if I pig out on the bird, I get drowsy!  After downing ten to fifteen pounds of heavy greasy food, I can sleep for hours...

In my mind, nothing says thanksgiving like a good old-fashioned tryptophan induced coma.  Of course, family and friends are an awesome byproduct of the season as well.  :)

Lets talk about the negative side of the holidays though.  Unfortunately, humans seem to be affected by tryptophan in more ways than one.  As Thanksgiving rolls around, we begin to see some preemptive lethargy settling over the rental market!  Of course, the obvious reason for this is that not many people want to go through the ordeal of moving during the holiday season.  Honestly, I can't blame them!

Lets face it, the only heavy box I want to lift during the holidays is the box containing a large frozen bird!  Other than that, I would say forget it.  Traditionally, the months of November and December are very sluggish for those of us who labor in the rental market.  I can only assume that the real estate sales market suffers from the same type of problem.  Anyone out there who can answer that please feel free!

Oddly enough my sales seem to favor the fall and winter... but that doesn't seem to be the trend.  Generally, like you say, things die off starting just a little after Halloween, but definitively so after Thanksgiving.

Whoops!  Wasn't signed in on that last comment (Doh!)

But I agree, sales slow down at the end of the year too.  I guess everybody wants to wait until they have to compete for homes with other buyers....

What a wonderful post! THanks for your humor. I find the clients that come out in Nov & Dec are more serious and there are fewer agents working (less competition) PLus the house look prettier when they are decorated (guess that wouldn't apply to rentals!
Nice topic

Diane- I may have inadvertently added major ammo to the bad tenants!

Cindy- Ah! you are another fortunate one!  I think that the market in the OC is a bit stronger than here anyway.  I am glad to hear that you are hanging in there!

Joeann- You make an excellent point about homes being decorated.  You are right however, we don't get many owners who will decorate their vacant houses! LOL!

Johathan - there are some of us who don't do turkeys for the holiday. Here at the Lake, November and December, or until it snows to stay until April, are traditionally the slowest months of the year for buyer activity.

Jonathan,
Wonderful post. Sleeping and Real Estate. Now there's a combination you don't see everyday! LOL
Our market over here on the "other" coast, tends to heat up along with Turkey at this time of the year.
I am not reporting you to the APA unlike Rich. ha ha Best of luck to you!

Gary- What do you guys substitute for the old bird?  I am also a big fan of ham...and steak...and lamb...and fish...

Lisa and Robert- I am beginning to think that I am in the wrong place!  Does your market slow down in the summer then?  Or is it strong year round?

Wow- my diet has involved a fair amount of turkey (instead of better tasting fare)- I'd rather be a fat realtor than a drowsy one- thanks for the knowledge, and HELLO, ROAST BEEF!

Very clever post!  It's been a long time since I heard the word "tryptophan"....outside of biochem classes.  Now, if we could figure out the chemical that makes those guys on TV play ball so hard while we watch, we might be onto something that could help real estate agents...Perhaps, it's the prospect of making money while everyone is watching from tryptophan induced coma like states. :)

I think we need to wait one moment here.  Traditionally we dip in September, then October's numbers are lower than September and then November's numbers are lower than October's and then December's numbers are lower than November and then January we start seeing it go up.

Guess what, October is going to be November.

WOOOO FREAKING HOOO!!!!

I agree with most of the comments above.

Here is my penny worth. I think that you are displaying the price before you have outlined in copy that this is a win win for the right person or company. $49.95 is nothing for the person who can use the site.

You might want to look at a site like http://thecuttingedgerealtor.com/ or http://www.instantsalesletters.com/

You can see from these sites how they use long copy with testimonials, bonuses, yellow highlighting to grab the attention of the reader who is in a hurry, etc to entice the potential customer. It is generally difficult to find the price as this becomes irrelevant to the right punter.

When I read this post it instantly reminded me of this recipe I make every year with the leftover turkey meat and the carcass....Homemade Turkey & Rice Soup!  It is truly hypnotic. Whever I make it, I give a bowl to the dog as well. Next thing you know, 20 minutes later, we are both belly-up.

Sounds like a plan Doug!  I love Red Bull.  I will be the second to endorse its use as an answer to Tryptophan!
