Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth:  Birmingham's Loss of an Original Foot Soldier

Rev Fred Shuttlesworth, a name many may not recognize as an integral part of the Civil Rights Movement, died on Wednesday, October 5, 2011.  When we speak of the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Martin Luther King comes prominently to mind.  But what a lot of people don't know is that had it not been for Rev. Shuttlesworth, we would probably know little about King.  You see, it's long been said that Rev. Shuttlesworth called upon King to lead the Civil Rights Movement.

Reverend Shuttlesworth was 89 years old and had suffering from ill health for the past several years.  We wish his family well and express our deepest sympathy for the loss of the man and the legend.

Charita, Rev. Shuttlesworth was well known in this area and I've seen him frequently in the newspaper here over the years.  He did the tough work when it needed done.

You just know that he made such a difference in many, many lives.  You can see the kindness in his eyes.

I saw an article about him here in the Fresno paper this morning.  Had no idea who he was, or what he did or stood for.  Thank you so much for sharing this with us.  Hope he rests in peace.

I read about this just this morning on Facebook and Twitter.  Someone else who has made a difference for the good in our lives whose legacy will always be with us.

Charita,

I'm familiar with many of the folks in the civil rights movement, and the SCLC, but not Rev. Shuttlesworth. Thanks for the insightful post and may God bless his loved ones.

I was still a young girl during that time, but know the importance of those that supported and uplifted MLK's journey.  I'm glad you posted this because although not personally familiar with Rev. Shuttlesworth, I am now!  There were many unsung heros that dedicated their life to this cause.
