Are You Frustrated With Government ?

Selling new homes in Halifax Regional Municipality is about to get more difficult. All of us real estate professinals know how difficult it is with the present market conditions. New home constuction is down 18% due to the recent changes to mortgage availabilty. Now HRM has made this announcement

In September, Halifax Regional Council recommended new fees for builders of $2,000 for each new
home and condo and $1,600 for each apartment unit. Council also recommended an increase $0.90 per
square meter for non-residential uses. Together, these increases would generate approximately $3.5
million in capital funds per year.

Builders and developers are stuggling as it is.Resale home inventory has risen with more competition for fewer buyers. Many jobs rely directly on new home construction. I appeal to those of you in HRM to contact your local member of HRM to make them aware that commonsense dictates this is not the time for them to do this. If enough of us make our concerns known we may be able to convince them to not do this. We all know if HRM does this all municipal governments will follow suit. We do not need this deterant to economic growth in HRM or through out the province at this time. This is my opinion only but I felt compelled to voice it and recommend you do the same.

I think there's a secret society that requires people involved in planning, zoning, and other government regulation of construction to forget anything they every knew about supply and demand and basic economics. I have tried to have discussions relating restrictive zoning to the increased cost of housing. They won't hear of it. It's only the greed of the builders causing high prices...

Larry, We pay people to come up with ways to steal our money. I can't believe how much tax and fees they expect to squeeze from us!

I think we all feel the same way Donna. Government can not accept the fact that our biggest problem is too much government and it's regulation and cost is our single most important problem. Now so many Nova Scotians work for one level of government or another that it is hard to cut government with out hurting many everyday Nova Scotian's. The solution is more job creation in the private sector but as a small business person myself I can tell you that is a tough problem to solve. Most small business people do not see government as being there to help them. In my conversations with farmers to contracters all view government as a hinderance to growing their business. Not that government doesn't want to help business. They Do. They just do not now how. There are two types of intelligence analytical and social. Government thrives on anaylitical. Research eveything and accomplish nothing. Business thrives on social by interacting with customers and suppliers and getting it done. Entrepeneurs thrive on social intelligence while governments thrive on analytical intelligence. The two approaches are miles apart and frustrating for both sides. The loser is the every day Nova Scotian who just wants a good job and secure future.Until the private sector and government can effectively work together I don't see that happening. Sorry for the rant and thanks for commenting.
