In the Lower Fairfield County towns of Greenwich, Stamford and Norwalk the temperature changed last week. As normal, I like other Mommies had my children try on last year's winter coats to check the size. When they did not fit, we went to the store and purchased new ones. Something that is often understood and perhaps taken for granted. However it occurred to me that there are many families in our community that are not as fortunate to have the resources to stop to the store and buy new coats, hats and mittens.
I serve on the board of directors of Person to Person, a non-profit organization in Fairfield County which has a clothing closet, among it's numerous other offerings. After speaking with Ceci Maher, the executive director, I realized that indeed many families come into the office needing coats, hats and mittens to keep their children warm. I realized this was a chance to something about it and serve the community that has given much to me.
My goal is to collect 100 new or slightly used coats, 100 hats and 100 mittens for the children of lower Fairfield County. The items will be donated to Person to Person. Where 80% of the families served by the organization live in my hometown of Stamford and 14% live in neighboring Norwalk. While I could not bear the idea of my children going to school cold, I can only imagine there are other parents out there who feel the same way. Please join me in keeping 100 children in Stamford, Norwalk and Greenwich stay warm this season.
