The Occupy Movement - Exercising the American right to free speech and freedom of assembly

Inspired by Christopher Somers" post about Occupy Philadelphia

http://activerain.com/blogsview/2547716/occupy-philly-ignorant-americans-or-americans-against-ignorance-and-greed-

The Occupy Movement is on to something. The frustrations of young people who worked hard, studied and took loans to get their education and now find no work is palpable. It is the young people who usually are idealisitic enough and maybe risk adverse enough to start the protest. It is interesting to see that retirees are coming out and people from all walks of life are supporting this movement.

I credit Philadelphia - the administration embodied by Mayor Nutter and the Philadelphia Police Department, especially Commissioner Ramsey - for acting responsibly. Demonstrations in the name of freedom of speech and freedom of assembly are guaranteed by the constitution, Keeping it peaceful and refining the message will help the movement gain credibility.

Democracy, as practiced in the street, can be ugly and a little scary but it is true domocracy. For the past three years, the Tea Party has grown to be a force in primarily conservative politics. I don't believe in just about anything they stand for, but I recognize their right to assemble and get their message out.

The message of the 99% is very interesting and our "so-called" leaders on both sides would be wise to pay attention. Ending gridlock, by having a conversation and some compromise will go far to end our problems.

People who are job insecure and food insecure - who aren't sure what the future holds - are not going to buy houses. As painful as the housing situation is, the jobs situation is critical. Our leaders, elected by the people, have made some far reaching decisions in the last 30-40 years. The global economy is a nice idea in theory, but Americans without jobs cannot buy American products.  When folks can get jobs and feel more secure financially, the housing market will recover.

For years, I have been saying that the lower end of the housing market, fueled by first time buyers, would be the start of the housing recovery. Prices, inventory and interest rests being so attractive, I am starting to see this happen. Economists have predicted that this "percolating up" could take two years or more. As painful as that sounds, it would be a natural recovery, one that is not fueled by artifical tax credits.

I look forward to the Occupy Movement refining its message and growing. I applaud the demonstrators for their time, enthusiasm and courage. I applaud those who are supporting the movement - rhetorically and financially. The American people are finally starting to voice their concerns. May we all listen and if our leaders do not or cannot respond in a responsible way, all of their jobs should be at risk.

I do get amused at some of them as they text each other on their capitalistically made Iphones and Ipads.  I heard a young woman say, "If the rich would just give us their money, we'd all be rich!"  Really?  For a weekend, maybe.  But, I would never want to see speech muzzled for any reason.

Hi Ann - As a child of the 60's, it's good to see people out in the streets again. Whether or not I agree with them - and I mostly do, since I took the time to listen and read, instead of just jerking my knee - that kind of energy and commitment has gone largely missing for a long time, and it's absence allowed our pockets to get picked pretty cleanly. Dialog is good for all of us - we should open our ears to it. And yeah, we're going to hear a lot of stupid stuff - from all sides - but there are some pretty valid thoughts flying around out there - again from all sides.

Anne,

Some of them are so comical but I think the media choose those to put on television.

I'm with you and Dick...I went down to Occupy Seattle yesterday afternoon and took some time to listen to what they were saying and really look at what was going on instead of just listening to the limited news reports and articles that exist.

What I found was an amazing amount of passion and quite a bit of actual intelligence.  There aren't many protests you can walk into and have conversations about the french revolution and economics and politics that are actually intelligent.  It's more like sitting on a college campus having discussions then typical protests.

MIke: As witnessed by some other remarks, we are only seeing a smattering of the people who are out in so many cities. Whatever the local reporter, and the local news station chooses to put on. I think this is an interesting phenomenon, and their message may solidify as time goes on. Also, since each protester came out on their, they each seem t have a myriad of issues. And younger protesters are not going to understand all the intricacies of the economy. It's just hitting home for some that they are facing major student loans with no prospects.  BTW, I remember the press the one senior got telling some official SHe wanted the government to stay away from her medicare.

Russel: Thank you for stopping by. Your comment did make me happy.

Dick: Not every protester will have a PHD in Economics, Marketing, Liberal Arts, etc. That's okay.  They understand the constitution and they understand the need to speak out.  The protesters in the 60's and into the 70's were against a war that we eventually got out of.

Judi: I agree about the media.  Initially the media did not even cover this in New York.

Kim: Christopher Somers inspired my post by going to Philadelphia, witnessing the situation for himself and changing his own mind. I have to get to the city. I want to see for myself.

Don: There sure is...whether we have the time and inclination to protest or not.

Good post, Anne.  For many, it is a time of great uncertainty and that is not good for the real estate business.

Enjoy the fall activities and be sure to have your camera in hand to capture those special moments.

Hi Anne,  It seems we have two extreme groups or movements now. The tea party on the far right and the occupy movement on the far left. Personally I think both are fringe groups. I'm a pragmatic centrist. LOL.

Thanks for sharing this information. I read and considered. I thought  about Freedom, and the Freedoms we enjoy... and how lucky we are to live in the USA where Freedom  DOES ring!
