Bad Media, Giant Foods, and Sour Grapes - What's up with That?

What's up with the new Giant Foods TV commercials with the mom talking about how much she trusts Giant to have her back?

O.K., I'm paraphrasing here but basically Giant Mom tells us she's a busy mom, her family's on a budget (trying to save for a single-family home that'll give her boys "a back yard") AND she just does not have the time nor inclination to look at sales or check the paper for coupons(!), or otherwise waste her valuable time doing any research (you know, the type of stuff we normal folks need to find the time to do).

So, she goes on to say that if she needs grapes, she'll get grapes (dammit!) and she'll get those grapes from Giant because she "trusts" Giant to have the best prices and be there for her, and yada, yada, yada...

And I'm thinking to myself, "Where the hell is SHE shopping?" because the Giant in MY neighborhood is high as hell. My bottom line in Giant is "if it ain't on sale, I ain't buying".

Do these advertisers really think we're idiots? Is this commercial supposed to make me run out to Giant because (yeah, come to think of it, that lady is right!) their prices are the best? Actually, I think they expect me to go to the website they post in the commercial to "tell my story" about how I love Giant. Nah, I don't think they want that.

My eyes involuntarily start to roll to the back of my head whenever this commercial comes on because for one thing, it's a stupid commercial, and for another I know this lady won't be buying-up from her townhouse anytime soon if she continues to "trust" Giant to have her back (and take her money)...

I have had enough. HONESTLY! It's the same idiotic mindset at play with all the doom and gloom reports about the real estate industry. It's like, if you say it enough times and with enough conviction and distribute it to the masses daily...TA-DA!...it's true.

2 things.  1.  The real estate industry where most of us are sucks.  2.  Yes.  They do think you are an idiot.  Just like the WalMart people think you are an idiot.  They are trying to get you to think that you don't need to value shop because everything is cheaper at Giant or WalMart.

Yeah, right.  If you go there and just buy everything you want without coupon or looking at other ads, you are going to get screwed.  They know it, but don't want you to know.

You know, I am not a huge fan of Walmart and unfortuntaly we have three super centers in a town of 100,000.  But, shopping on budget, I do know they will match other grocery store ads.  I walked through the store with my different ads and was impressed with my ingenious idea to save a little money.  I was surpised to learn that many of the items I was going to tell Walmart they needed to match were actually cheaper at Walmart than in the ad.  But I still try to avoid it!

Hmmm...

WalMart has an interesting way of doing business, Rich and Jennifer; they like to bring in new items at a good price, then slowly increase the price until it's no longer a good deal.

Take ACTIVIA yogurt for example.  When it came to my local WalMart, it was $1.88, a full dollar less than any other place (Safeway, Giant, Target...).  Since I love this stuff, I stocked up.  Next time I went back, it was $2.08, then $2,28....and on...and on...you get the picture.

I only use this one as an example, but I'll tell you -- if you got time, I got stories...
