Though we don’t exactly get cold during the fall here in Gainesville, Florida, we definitely start to see a difference in the length of days, the chilly mornings and a slightly lower electric bill. When this season rolls around, it’s hard not to start noticing the change in décor that comes along with it. So, as experts on the home, we thought we’d give you a few ideas on how to make your palace as autumnal as it can be!
1) Color Coordinated: One of the best parts of the fall season is the amazingly rich colors that come out, like the reds, oranges and chocolate browns. But there are other colors that sometimes get neglected during this season that could really warm up the homestead, like greens and even plums or wine colors. It’s also a good time to consider your patterns, and pull out the plaid or argyle.
2) Go Natural: Include more in your design scheme than just pumpkins! Though we associate autumn with the harvest, we often forget to use what nature gave us in our designs. Nuts, wreaths, veggies and fruits, like squash and apples, are all great in design and bring not only color but texture and uniqueness!
3) Think Vintage: It’s a lot easier to decorate for fall than you might think. Play up old pieces, like vintage keys, antique books or old-worldly fabric patterns that bring that same cozy feeling to your décor, without pushing it over the top.
4) Light It Up: It’s easy to associate fall with the hearth, but throwing in some beautiful candles can give a similar feeling when we’re in a much warmer climate. Different scents, like apple spice or cinnamon, can bring that fall feeling without turning the house into an oven. Not to mention, having a little glow here and there gives a natural glow over the room that’s much calmer and cozier than your average 60 watt!
5) Think Spooky: We’re nearing Halloween, and though sometimes things can get out of hand, not all themed decorations have to be tacky. Go with things that are less cartoonish and more elegant, like white pumpkins or simple black and orange pillows and accents. It brings the holiday into your home, but keeps it from looking like a haunted house!
Be bold! Don’t be afraid to mix and match colors and styles to find just the right level of autumn comfort that you’ve been looking for. When you’re done decorating, send us photos of your fall success and we’ll display our favorites in a post dedicated to YOUR autumn design! We can’t wait to see what you’ve come up with!
