Newtown Arts Company stages "Black Coffee" an Agatha Christie whodunit!
Agatha Christie remains the best-selling mystery writer of all time and Belgian crime solver Hercule Poirot is Ms. Christie's best-loved crime solver. "Black Coffee", Agatha Christies's first play, employs Poirot in a charming murder mystery currently being staged by the Newtown Arts Company through 19 at Newtown Theatre.
Inspector Hercule Poirot, long considered Ms. Christies' most beloved character appears in numerous Christie novels and shorts stories, but only this one play, Ms. Christie's first. "Black Coffee" is not well known. Jane DeKorte, the current production's co-director with James McCrane, is responsible for tracking down the play which was long out of print in the U.S.
In typical Christie fashion, the clues keep coming. It was interesting to listen to audience members debating on the murderer would be during the intermission. Some of the characters in this period piece, set 25 miles outside of London in the 1930's, are larger than life. This technique helps to set the drama and also provides comic relief.
The company is made up of local actors and actresses from the greater Newtown area who are truly dedicated to community theater and the art of a well staged production. Proceeds from all Newtown Arts Company productions fund scholarship grants to local students pursuing post-secondary education in the performing and fine arts.
There is still time to catch Newtown Arts Production "Black Coffee". Curtain times for “Black Coffee” are Tuesday, Oct. 18 and Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $16, $19 and $31.
