Internet Marketing has become Much more Difficult Now?

I was listening to web marketing pod cast last week, yes this is what web developers do in their spare time.  The guest speaker said how much more difficult marketing is becoming on the internet now.  His reasons were that your target audience is spending more time playing games online or on the computer, than they are surfing the web, putting them outside of your advertisement reach.

Okay so, let’s analyze this statement a bit, I mean after all WoW, that’s World of Warcraft to you none cyber geeks out there, is one of the most widely played games in cyberspace.  So there has to be is a high level of truth to this statement, right?  While I have never played WoW, I respect those who do, after all I have a few friends that work at Blizzard Entertainment the makers of WoW.  But does this mean that because this audience is in front of WoW and not Google, you cannot reach them anymore?  Let’s look at the demographics on WoW players.

Gamer Demographics

Well as it turns out, Nielsen has done some research on the WoW community.  The age group of players ranges from 25 – 54 and WoW was the most played ‘core’ game among females with just under 40% of the 11.1 million players.   Among males however, these stats as you might expect is more impressive.  WoW owns more than 6 million unique male players which means the gender gap is not as large as you might have thought for this demographic.  The last important stat is that on average these adults spend about 11 hours a week playing WoW.  So yes, this could be time spent in front of Google, blogs, Facebook or Twitter, but isn’t this a little greedy of us to expect that?

Turning Lemons into Lemonade!

So you can look at this as… this is valuable time that your clients won’t get to market to this group as the notable guest speaker said… or you could educate yourself on this demographic and make this a specialty market for your consulting firm.  Since this is a wide demographic, 25 – 54 you can almost advertise anything to this group of gamers.

Did you know?

World of Warcraft belongs to the MMORPG (Massively multiplayer online role-playing game) or MMOG market and they are not the only kids on the block.  There is also Rift, Eve Online, Darkfall, Aion and many many more.  If you spend a little time looking at these markets, you will find out that like any market, cell phones, tablets, ect., these games have accessories and things to purchase.  This is your opportunity to find these keywords and market your clients items to this group.  In fact if you really get to know the groups playing these games you will find out more about them and more about how to market to them, what they need.

Summary

So while there is always something changing in markets, from cell phones to smart phones, to tablets to games reaching a 50 year old demographic… the term you need to embrace is adapt.  Every market has opportunities; is  marketing is getting more difficult, yes but I think it is only because as markets mature, more people figure out the little niches to advertise to, what else is new.

Thanks Pat, very true :), in real estate, if you dont have a mobile site, you are loosing on hundreds of leads per month from potential clients.
