Day 6 - My Journey to Stop Smoking ~ My Reasons to Quit

As I explained in Day 1  and Day 2 - My Journey to Stop Smoking, the first week, using Chantix, is a week of preparation. Not much has happened over Days 3-6 other than reading the materials Pfizer emails me as part of the GETQUIT program (which are great tips) everything is the same. I’m getting my head around the reasons I want will quit. Here are a few off the top of my head, feel free to add to this list.

My Reasons To Quit:Smoking non smoking

  1. Smoke smell
  2. Bad Breath
  3. Holes burned in clothes (usually new ones)
  4. Burned car seats
  5. Burned random body parts from falling hot ash
  6. Burned others (kids, dogs, etc.) with cigarettes (by accident, but hurts just the same)
  7. Bad for my health
  8. Bad for the kids in the car
  9. Expensive at  $6+ per pack here in Maryland - $40+ a week - $2000+ a year
  10. I want beautiful white teeth
  11. Health care costs more
  12. Life insurance costs more
  13. Takes years off my life
  14. It’s just ugly
  15. Actions speak louder than words and I don’t want my kids doing it.
  16. As a cancer survivor, need I say more?

Best of luck to you.  Keep that list and refer to it EVERY DAY!  After I wrote out what my life would be like if I got 150 lbs off and started LIVING, I set out to make it happen.  HARD!  but kept that vision in mind and after a year have lost 80 lbs by eating right and working out with a trainer.  I feel like a million bucks!  Yes, it's a physical battle, but even more, its a mental battle.  Yay You!

Dianna,  I rolled past this blog in a hurry towards my next task but told myself I would be back.. SO here I am! I am an ex-smoker, pack a day guy for about 30yrs. Tried, failed, tried something else..failed, pills, patches you name it I tried it.  Watched two Sisters die of cancer and a thousand other RED FLAGS! Then one day I took back my power, I refused to allow a damn cigarette steal my life. Finally I won, I got my power back, cigarettes will never darken my day or steal another second of my life.

#1 Reason to Quit.  Because you can!

I will be watching for your success story!  Git R Done!

Dianne- I'm not a smoker but my husband was.  You can do it... you've listed many good reasons not to even start again.  So don't.  In the beginning, I will tell you he snacked on sunflower seeds (something about the oil in them).. he said it helped.  His chair looked like we had a birdcage there but who cares.  He stopped.  You have a lot of support here, so call on it if you need to.  Good luck!!!

Great list!  Commend you on the courageous post.  Sounds like you are reaching out...one thing you didn't mention was an action step.  Take up running with a running club or treadmill at the gym.  Most smokers have diminished lung capacity and the running makes a good point of why to quit.  Best to you and your kids!  Kristine :)

With 6 days under your belt, you can do it!!!  Congrats on kicking the habit.  It stinks to smoke and Lung Cancer is one of the top KILLERS in the US.  I am happy for you that you will be living longer.  Decaf Coffee helps when you are quitting or just hot tea.  I quit cold turkey 25 years ago and I have never looked back, I hate to be around people who smoke, they reek of the smoke smell, glad you are not going back there (HOPE THIS HELPS)

I smoked for years, from my teenage years up to in my late 20's. When I got pregnant I quit.......one thing about my body, it lets me know what is good for me.........if I attempt to light up today, I feel sick and if I continue, my stomach cramps and I start getting all kind of stomach problems. My body is smarter than my brain when it comes to smoking. Keep up the good work!

Diane, Chantix willl make it easy and best of all, you won't be interested in smoking again.  Chantix really gets to the source of the addiction.  The nicotine craving will be gone and while there will be some habit breaking to do, you can do it without the craving.  The reason they let you smoke for a time is to free you of the effects of smoking.  Chantix blocks your nicotine receptors, so there is no effect from smoking.  Nothing.  I continued to smoke for more than a week but less and less often as there was no point.  A lot of hassle for nothing....then I just quit.  Took the Chantix for a few more weeks to be sure but I easily broke an addiction of 40 years.  I had tried every method known before that but while I wasn't smoking I always wanted to, Chantix ended that.  I can sit with smokers and neither be offended or want their cigarette.  Miracle drug!  Hey, I even enjoyed the vivid, colorful dreams.
