Dear Inconsiderate Buyer:....Thank you for wasting my time!

Dear Inconsiderate Buyer:

I understand that everyone is looking to save money and get competitive bids.  I expect that and respect that.  I just wish you would also respect my time.

First, I'd like to thank you for giving me the incorrect address to your new home.  When I called to get the correct address...twice...you denied that there was a mistake. But, thank you, on the 3rd request for correcting your mistake.

Thank you for running late and calling every 20 minutes to tell me you need another 20 minutes.  Thank you for starting the appointment 1 hour and 10 minutes late.

I also want to thank you for telling me it "wasn't worth my time" to even meet w/ you...after I had wasted 2 hrs in combo of driving there (and my return trip and waiting in the car) not to mention that I also has spent time and money on a lovely dinner in McDonald's...since it seemed that this was the only place I could park.  Oh, and money for gas.

I felt badly for you because you clearly did not know what type of carpet you needed, and the previous person almost sold you the completely wrong carpet to you...one that would have been terrible for your allergies.  I felt badly, so I spent time and educated you and gave you several options that would work for your health needed and your upcoming baby.  I had several options that were all below your budget.  This was a small job for me, but I wanted to help you out, and I was hoping that in a few years when you bought your own home, that you would become a repeat customer.  And, I hoped that you would recommend me to your neighbors.

Thank you for wasting more of my time when you wanted to view the carpets in your lobby and then you stopped to chat and meet your new neighbors for 20 minutes while I just stood around.  I stayed with you until 9pm, so thank you for that, too.  Based on your feedback in finding a carpet that better met your needs and worked with your budget, it sounded like you were very pleased with everything.  I provided you with outstanding references.

Thank you for wasting more of my time on Friday when you asked me to make changes to the estimate and for calling my assistant a few times and asking her to make inquiries with the manufacturer.  I knew you were in a bit of rush, so gave you an expedient way of processing the order.

Thank you for calling me on a very busy Saturday and making me jump through hoops to see if I could install this by next Saturday. I called the manufacturer and was on hold for a while trying to get a definitive date of when the carpet would ship here, and I then called my installers twice begging them to free up Saturday for you.  I then called you back to let you know I solved another issue for you. You then told me that you needed to confirm things with your husband and you would call back.  We were in a rush and needed to place the order by 2:55pm before they closed at 3pm.

Thank you for hanging up on me at 2:15 and then not answering my call at 2:45.  Thank you for the thoughtful text telling me "you can not sign the contract."

You know, there is a reason we are VERY BUSY.  And, that is because we run a good business and our customers love us.  We get lots of referrals and repeat business, and there is a reason for this.  I really appreciate you taking up so much of my time these last 3 days.  Today, I could have been following up with real customers who care and respect my time.

I hope next time, when you are working with someone, that you are more respectful of their time.  I hope that you have learned from this experience for next time, and I hope that you forward this to all your friends, since I know there are many other time wasters out there, and many unsuspecting people like me who innocently try to help people like you.

Thank you for this important lesson.  I am going to go with my gut more often and not work with people like you.  I'm sorry I wasted so much of my valuable time trying to help you.

I had to get htis off my chest...This is follow up to my Thursday night post where I jumped through hops and problem solved for my customer who at first was disrespectful of my time, but then appeared to be very appreciative and she told she they would be a customer for life.  This was not the outcome I expected since she was filling out all the paperwork yesterday.

I feel a bit better now.

You're right, Debbie... you have to go with your gut. You seem like someone who is very focused on delivering the very best customer service to your clients. Your total focus is on educating and advising your clients so they can make a great decision. In retrospect, I'm sure you feel there was a point at which you could stop being so focused on your client's needs and recognize that they were totally not respecting you. That's the point at which to say, "bye bye now" to quote Barbara! Anyone who is really interested in getting the best information and best flooring products in the Westchester, NY area needs to call Debbie Gartner, Floor Coverings International!

Hi Debbie,

Sometimes the only thing you can go with is your gut and you were right on this one! Sorry it happened but you will probably think twice when you get that feeling again that this customer could be jerking you around!

Nina - Thx.  Yes, in retropspect, I wish I had cut it off either the 2nd time when she told me she needed 20 more mins or never ever should have taken the appointment.  I learned later taht she was a renter.  That needs to be one our screening questions going forward.

Dorie - Yes, I will not make this mistake again.

Now that you have gotten this off your chest...it's time to move forward. Most of us have had similar experiences, and it really stinks when people don't respect your time and that you might want to spend a weekend, or evening, with your family. Good luck in the future. Your inner voice is usually right.

Oh Debbie, the warning signs are always there but it can be hard to turn the ship of our minds when we're zeroed in on helping someone.  I end up recognizing too late that the situation is the kind that inspired the old phrase "no good deed goes unpunished.!

Some can't get past me, me, me, and can't understand when others seem put out or upset by their antics.  Best to let these type of clients go...they do more harm than good.

Debbie - I know how little time you have and just how busy you are and I would have felt exactly the same way. Shame on these people and then to not even tell you over the phone, but text you?! That's a coward and a client you are so much better off without. I bet if you had done the job, this couple would have been a nightmare. So sorry you lost so much time and hope tomorrow brings you a much better day and some downtime. I'm tired just reading about all you do in one day! Thanks for  calling me - I'm always here for you, like you've always been there for me!

Inconsiderate people like this always get it in the end.  Not THAT end, but they should get it there too.

And better to find out who that customer was before you try to deposit the check...

Debbie - Wow sounds like a Real Estate related venting. It's good to get this off your chest I'll bet. Sometimes gut feelings are the only thing we can go with in our business as well. Sorry to hear you had one of these happen to you as well.. We would certainly endorse your services if given the chance. You would be the go to person for flooring in your area as your customer service is outstanding. Best of luck in the future but I know you wont need it...

Deb, it is such a shame that some people can be so disrespectful of others...i have been wanting to do one on Open Houses & will do it later this week...some buyers/lookers too are very disrespectful to others.  But it is the time wasting & we all have this with potential listers/buyers...that is why good referrals are the best!
