How to Survive a Cold.... Do THESE 5 Things!!!

cold How To Survive a Cold...Do THESE 5 Things!

I’ve just returned from a 2 week road trip and besides fond memories, some dirty laundry and an empty fridge....I’ve also returned with a cold.  Now, I don’t just get “a cold”.   See if you get something similar... it begins in your head.  You think you might be getting something and this is confirmed when everyone with whom you speak mentions you sound kind of “nasally”.  It then progresses into a huge bronchial thing.

Now... we’ve been told how NOT to get a cold... wash your hands, stay away from people with colds, etc.   However, inevitably you’re going to get one.  I can’t tell you how to cure one either.  Man has been trying for years but we can make you comfortable and then you have to ride it out.

But there ARE things you can do to SURVIVE a Cold and I’m sharing them with you:

1.  To Survive A Cold You Must Be Able to Sleep in Your Own Bed.There’s nothing worse than being on the road when you’re sick.  Get yourself home! (Unless of course you happen to be at “Mom’s” who makes the best homemade chicken soup and knows just how to take care of you).

2.  You must have the best tissue you can..  This is not the time to stock up on whatever is on sale!sneeze  Your nose is important.  It works hard every day to make sure you take oxygen in to breath.... it is your sniffer should something be on fire.  And, as they say.. you get what you pay for and if you do not want a red and raw nose take my advice … spring for the softest you can get.

3.Soup!  Mother was right.  They’ve even done studies on it and it’s true.  It doesn’t have to be home made either.  Just make sure to have plenty of it. I personally prefer chicken soup but since you’re going to be going through a lot of soup, I’d suggest stocking up on a variety.

4. Orange, V-8, Tomato and cranberry.... Drink the juices!  You’ve got to keep your fluid intake up when you’re sick.  If you’ve got a cold you can barely taste anything so juices, at least, taste like something.   You probably have these on hand in another part of your house already... you know the one that has the adult beverages.  Well forget about it!  You have a cold.  Grab what stash you have from the bar and see what they taste like unadulterated for a change.

orange juice5. Airborne and EmergenC.... I make a cocktail of these when I first think I’m coming down with something.  It may not prevent me from getting a cold but it may keep it from going full blown.  There are other similar remedies... Homeopathic treatments such as ColdCalm ® by Boiron.
But here’s what you may not know.... these aren’t for you... you’re already sick!  No, you need these to give to whomever your caregiver is.  I’ve been making these cocktails for my husband since I’ve  become sick.  Why?  Well, if your caregiver gets sick... who's going to take care of you??

So there are my 5 tips for surviving a cold.   Please note... I am not a doctor (goodness knows my mother would have been ecstatic had I chosen med school) nor do I play one on television.   These are my 5 chosen methods for surviving a cold.  You may have your own tips so feel free to leave them here in your comments.

Oh yes.... and to be prudent, if your symptoms persist please contact your doctor.

Wayne- I as well, my friend.  I have to get rid of the cold so I can get a flu shot.

Rob- the funny thing is we did have to spend the night in a hotel... I'd run out of kleenex, then had to use the hotel kleenex.  Oh my.... never do that!

Capt.Wayne- I had my husband take it always before a plane trip and especially during cold season when sitting in meetings with everyone.

Joanna- I pack in the C and soup....lots of it!

Jeanne and Ralph- Oh dear... but the juices taste so good!! You're right, though... I have to add I've been drinking hot tea... does that count?  You guys look great... so I'm listening to you!

Kathy - hope you get better really soon. Nothing worse than having to nurse a cold when the weather outside is so delightful as we've been having the last few days.

Hi Kathy -

I hope you feel much better.  My wife has informed me many times if you're a mom you are a doctor :)  Glad you're taking care of your hubby / caregiver he might take being sick as well as you.  Rest up, recover and hit the ground running again soon.

Best regards from the Q

OMGosh Kathy! The dreaded cold and it's not even winter yet! Great tips. Yes, lots of soup and juices. The Vitamin C in most of the juices won't hurt you either. I really like giving the EmergenC to your caregiver. Now that's a good idea!

Joyce (#5) I'm sorry I missed you earlier.  I'd never heard the one about pickle juice but we always have it here.  I may try it next time.

Toni- weather?  We've been warm but overcast and rainy all day today, but I'll still take it over cold weather.

HI John (the Q)- let me tell you another reason I don't want him to get sick, is he's a harder patient than I am!

Janice- I am now taking those quick cups of chicken soup with me when I travel.  There's nothing worse than wanting some hot soup when you're on the road.

Connie- it's survival of the fittest!  And it's more fun having him bring me soup and juice than the other way around.

Craig- oh you're too funny... my poor brother could hardly speak and his band had a job this past weekend.

Lou- the best advice is don't get sick!

Lloyd- hey, try Joyce's suggestion of drinking pickle juice.  I seriously believe in EmergenC though!  Feel Better.

Silvia- I know.. you have so much to catch up on and all you want to do is duck under the covers!

Kathy, I hate hearing that you are sick. Ride it out babes! You hit on the main points here and that's about all we can do. Just stay warm and cozy. Don't let it turn into pneumonia like mine did. Go to bed! Hugs...get well.

I had to laugh OUT LOUD at several points! Finally causing the hubby to inquire what was so funny! Tip #6 take your O's! Oscillococcinum by Boiron! 3 x day from the first signs that you may be getting sick! You know..scratchy throughout, hot ears, runny nose! Don't delay! Like you said, often times it will keep it from going FULL blown! Suggested!

Hi Kathy--I hope you are feeling better now.  Here is my favorite tip for dealing with a cold from Dr. Mercola

Hydrogen Peroxide: A Simple Trick to Beat a Cold

I don't advise over-the-counter medications, but one simple treatment you can try that is surprisingly effective against upper respiratory infections is hydrogen peroxide.

Many patients at my Natural Health Center have had remarkable results in curing colds and flu within 12 to 14 hours when administering a few drops of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into each ear. You will hear some bubbling, which is completely normal, and possibly feel a slight stinging sensation.

Wait until the bubbling and stinging subside (usually 5 to 10 minutes), then drain onto a tissue and repeat with the other ear. A bottle of hydrogen peroxide in 3 percent solution is available at any drug store for a couple of dollars or less. It is simply amazing how many people respond to this simple, inexpensive treatment.

The reason why I stopped by your post was to wish you well. I knew you had a bad cold. What a laugh I got when I saw what your blog post was about!

Hurry up and get well Kathy! You're to pretty to be sick and you don't need to be surrounded by a box of Kleenex. I wish you the best of health. Perhaps some good Chicken Soup would do the trick!

My husband was laughing at me as I took off running in the opposite direction of a toddler barking like a seal in the grocery store the other day!  Cute but they're walking germ factories.  I didn't even want to walk thru the air he had just coughed into (and no his Mother didn't suggest he cover his little mouth)  Any time I get a cold it immediately turns into something bronchial too so I do my best to avoid children.  Thanks for the tips and I hope you're feeling much better.

Deb- the biggest thing about this cold is it's plain annoying.  My colds actually become bronchitis so sleeping becomes almost out of the question.

Joni- thanks for the Boiron tip.  and.... so glad to give you a chuckle!!!

Janet- OMG... I have hydrogen peroxide right here!  I'm going to try it on my husband first!!!

Patricia- I'm so glad I got the 6-pack of chicken noodle soup the last time I was at Costco!  Thank you so much for stopping by... I feel better just seeing your smiling face.

Paula- I need to shake the cold so I can get a flu shot!!!

Brenda- that pretty much describes what I have!

Susan- I think anytime you're around young children (I was with my grandchildren) there are going to be germs present.  Aren't we all funny trying to stay away from people when we see they have a cough!  I carry those hand sanatizers with me too.

Hi Kathy, Gosh I hear more and more people getting sick after air flights and traveling.  Sorry to hear you got hit too.  Thanks to Joni's re-blog that I came over.  Sounds like you have the bases covered.  The main thing is to listen to your body: drink fluids like you said and rest as often as you can.   Unfortunately the cold has to run its course...

Get well quickly!
