When Did Self Control Fall Out of Fashion?

When Did Self-control Fall Out of Fashion?

A recent post started me thinking about the lack of self-control exhibited today.  When did that start?  When did it become more important to say whatever is on one’s mind rather than spare the other person’s feelings?

I know I liked it better when people didn’t always say what was on their minds.  The pretenses of politeness meant civility even when people strongly disagreed.

What happened to counting to 10 before responding?  Yes, self control is out of fashion today and we need to get it back!  That’s because, in the absence of societal self-control, narcissism becomes the new normal!

We cease to worry about burning relationship bridges and feel validated only when we’ve left nothing unsaid?

For me, something less than honesty would be fine.  Go ahead, just lie through your teeth and I’ll never know.  Tell me you appreciate my call even when you don’t.

You see, when our interaction is positive, I’ll remember you for an entirely different reason!

Ran into one of those "unthiking" reponses when another agent gave "feedback" that was more insulting than it was constructive.

Yesterday, I called an agent to give her feedback. I started by saying the house showed well, that it was so neat. Then I told her that the owner may want to tone down the use of potpourri or whatever she uses to impart a scent which was rather strong (I didn't use "overpowering") and may be harmful to people who are very sensitive to certain fragrances. She thanked me for the feedback, and we ended on a positive note.

Patricia, you handled it beautifully.  I confess that I have not always done as well.  I've become too blunt and you are reminding me to use more discretion.
