Last week with the wildfires raging though Southern California, many towns were under full evacuation. Many left pets behind including horses, dogs and cats.
In Ramona the Animal Emergency Rescue stayed behind to gather up the animals they could find and care for them until the danger passed and the people of Ramona could come back to claim them.
The town was evacuated on Sunday and on Monday I got a call from a volunteer pleading for help. There was no food for the horses and no one could enter or leave Ramona.
I got together with a few volunteers and we quickly put a plan together to not only get them food and supplies, but to get it throught the road blocks into the evacuated town.
We sent down several hundred bales of hay, halters and leads, buckets, water barrels, medical supplies, dog food, cat food and support for the volunteers. We had a helicopter on stand by in case we couldn't get through the road blocks to drop in the food and supplies to the hungry horses.
We did make our delivery through the roads into Ramona and found several hundred hungry animals, grateful for the food and supplies.
We sent a second load down on Saturday.
We've also set up a website for those wanting to continue to help and for a place for those who need help to post, check out ca cares.com.
Thanks to the many volunteers and donors who participated in this effort!
