CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT THIS BIRD IS?

CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT THIS BIRD IS?

I was taking pictures Sunday of a housing development I will be blogging about when I saw this bird.  I think it is a gull, but I was too far away to identify it.  And I am a lousy gull identifier.  If you know what it is, please let me know.

CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT THIS BIRD IS?

DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?

When I am on picture safari of houses, I always see some interesting birds.  I love Alameda if only for the interesting birds I see. But there are lots of other reasons.

Alameda is a wonderful island community.  If you would like more information about Alameda, please call or text me  at 510-504-5612.

Evelyn, I will be watching to see what someone calls it.    Have not seen this bird before.

Yeah, it's a gull. Look at the beak. They come in all sorts of colors and sizes at the beach here in SoCal. They're not all white like some people think.

Sharon:  I hope someone helps.  The feathers are very beautiful, not what I associate with a gull.

Joan:  If you read Jeff's comment I think you'll find the answer.

Jeff:  The closest I can get is a juvenile California Gull.  What do yo think?

Joni:  I think Jeff has the answer.  We'll see if anyone else thinks so too.

Judging by the head shape and the beak, I'd say it is a gull. The gray color is different then most gulls Evelyn. Hope this helps in some way.

Tom:  I think we are right that it is a gull.  That is why I hate to try and identify gulls.  They take so long to mature and each stage looks different from the mature bird.  Thanks for helping.

Thanks for visiting my blog.  Sometime I just have to write about something other than real estate.  Birds are my default subject.

Hi Evelyn,

I looks like a gull but I am not 100% sure. Thanks for sharing your bird as they are my favorite. I absolutely love taking bird photographs even if some are just backyard birds as they all have special personalities and drive my dogs wild. I am still trying to photograph a screech owl in my yard. I only see him flying away once in a while. Thanks for the photo.

Please share your bird photos.  I love looking at birds in backyards in different areas of California and of the country.   If you are able to take a photo of the own, please post it.  Thanks for visiting my blog.

Today I saw a bird on my deck rail that looked out of place here - then I suddenly realized it was a woodpecker. They aren't common, but there are a few. Unfortunately, there was no camera in my hand at that moment.

The most puzzling I ever saw was a bird of prey. It was standing in the middle of the road one morning as I came around a corner and I only got a few seconds to stare before it flew off.

I hunted in every bird book I could find trying to identify it, but with no luck. Maybe because it was a young bird so it's coloring was different? I knew it was a bird of prey because it was large and it had stockings (or whatever you call them - feathers down its legs.)

I always appreciate seeing wildlife...

Marte:

I have had similar experiences.  I see a bird I can't immediately identify and no camera near by.  I do know many birds but there is always one I can't identify immediately.  At least you know a hawk from a raven. That is good.

Evelyn, the thing with gulls as with many other birds is that they change their colors as they mature.  There are a several common gull species along the California coast that this would apply to for example, the Herring Gull, California Gull, and Western Gull.

Silvia:

Yep, I know.  That is why I never try to identify immature species of gulls.  But I thought others more knowledgeable might know.  Thanks for you comment and hope your Saturday is a glorious as our is.
