ITS TOUGH OUT THERE FOR SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS

Home Tresures Wilsonville OregonIt is a tough business climate for the small business owner trying to make a living these days.  So much goes into making a business successful within a community, so many hoops to jump through, rules and regulations, financial decisions, marketing, business plan.  So many hoops especially if this is your first venture.

Money is tight for most Americans right now and spending has been curtailed in a big way for most people on a budget, trying to make ends meet. A lot of small businesses just don't make it even though the outlook was good in the beginning and in today's paper (October 21, 2011) this was the headline about two local Wilsonville business owners.

"Wilsonville women say goodbye to home decor store, gathering place."

The story by Rachel Stark of the Oregonian told the story of two sisters that had a dream and a passion for serving women.  They opened Carol Rose Home Treasures in a modest space next to the West Coast Bank in the Town Center Loop in Wilsonville.  They were open for three years, but with the economy in a downward direction and not a lot of business experience they have now decided to call it quits.  They are closing and having a liquidation sale that will last until everything is gone and the shelves are empty.

The point of this blog is that it is difficult in this economy to survive even with the best of intentions and hearts of gold.  Jobs that are scarce, money being tight for everyone and non-essentials that are not on the top of the list for a lot of people bring small sales for a lot of small businesses.

I give these sisters accolades for trying the "American Dream", starting their own business and throwing fear out the window to make it happen.

Read the story if you will and you will see what I mean. Below is Gayle Baker one of the owners of Carol Rose Home treasures.

Anna it is a bummer for them.  I have been in their store and they had so many beautiful things at reasonable prices.  Sad to see them go, but sometimes you have to know when to call it quits or done for now.

Hi Mary, I have been making a conscious effort to use my local mom and pop stores instead of the big huge ones when I can. I do hate to see when a small store needs to close up shop. It is a dream and like you said, good for them for the trying. I hope one day they'll go at it again.

Mary, it is indeed difficult for many small business these days.  I hope things turn around soon and the sisters are able to rebuild and perhaps start again.

Mary, the sisters have gained experience and have learned what "not to do" next time. I am sure they gave it their "best shot"..... but, we all know, that the average American consumer is spending money on essentials now, and, paying their bills the best they can.

Hi Mary,  I go out of my way to go to small mom and pop shops, my parents had a restaurant for years and the locals made it a great business.

Being a member of our Chamber of Commerce, I try to keep my shopping local and at my member's stores, Mary. This is a shame that so many of our small business people aren't making it.

Good Morning Cindy,

First of all Great Photo !  I am with you in trying to use local merchants as much as I can.  Sometimes they are a little higher, but I want them to succeed. I too hope perhaps they will try again when time is appropriate in their world, takes courage to begin a new business.

Good Morning Lisa,

I as well hope they try again when things are right for them, Wilsonville is not the easiest place to begin a new business such as theirs and they were off the beaten path a little, but it was truly a nice store with lots of great merchandise.

Good Morning Teri,

You are so right about people being a lot more careful with their spendable money.  I know I am and even just the essentials like groceries are a lot more expensive than they were even one year ago.  I think more than twice when I make a purchase that is just a want and not a need.

Good Morning Will,

I do the same, even if I have to travel a few miles I will do it.  My husband and I try to frequent restaurants that are local (especially Italian) and support the community in that way as well.  It is really fun, when you go in and they remember you and greet you with such warmth.  I simply love that.

Many years ago when my husband and I moved from a small town to the West Linn area in Oregon (small too) I was very nervous and thought I was so far away from home and was very scared.  I went into the town of Lake Oswego, just 8 minutes away, and went into a local drug store on the corner of two main streets.  The moment I went in they were so friendly and the girl asked if I wanted to open an account.  Now this was in the 70's early and I was in my mid twenties and was flattered that anyone would ask me that.  I opened the account and met all the employees, the pharmacist and the employees NEVER forgot my name from that moment on, it was amazing.  I shopped there for many many years until they sold out to Rite Aide.  Now, that is GREAT business.

Good Morning Toni,

You are right, it is a shame that a lot of times small businesses just cannot make it long term. The business environment is difficult these days, purchasing inventory is expensive so then you have to mark it up for a small margin of profit.  Sometimes the markup does not even cover keeping the lights on.  People in Wilsonville are really loyal to merchants, but the loss of jobs and economy makes is difficult.  We do have lots of NODs in this area, from there who knows.  Sad very Sad.

Home decor has been one of the hardest hit businesses in the past few years. Maybe if the women had diversified and offered rentals of home staging items, that would have helped to have an additional stream of income. And another, maybe classes on do it yourself home repairs.

JoAnn, what great advice and ideas perhaps they could have implemented.  You are right it might have helped to keep their doors open.  Those ideas would have been very valuable plus we have a lot of Realtors and Home Staging people in the area.  Priceless ideas.

Hi Mary,

I like JoAnn's idea that they could have offered home staging items for rental -- wish they'd thought of that, or that I'd known about their store.  As a small business owner myself, I can certainly relate to the challenges of operating in a down economy. We're all trying to think of new ways to do something, and it's sad to hear of doors closing.  I wish them all the best in their next adventure!

Hi Maureen,

I see different doors closing because of decreased sales and the economy.  When I look at the rate of foreclosures or NOD's in Oregon it is sad so very sad.  This is a good thought for someone like you who does staging to perhaps make an alliance with some of these businesses, who knows perhaps something would come of it for both parties.

Mary, I remember hearing a talk on NPR about how many folks have started small businesses with the downturn in the economy and losing their jobs working for large companies. I thought, what an interesting way to look at it, an opportunity to try something that people think about but don't act on. I am thankful for women like this who tried. It doesn't mean this is it for them!  Remember how many times Babe Ruth struck out, along with how many home runs he hit!
