It's Not Easy to Force Feed a Child or a Business--Fall Season of Miracles

Last summer my one year old granddaughter decided to stop eating. Yes, that's a drastic statement but that is exactly what happened.  One day she was happily munching on finger food snacks and eager to climb into her highchair at mealtime, the next she was refusing all food after a bite or two and only half interested in her bottle or nursing.

After a few days of this my daughter knew a trip to the pediatrician was in order.  "Nothing, to worry about," was his response, but the disinterest in food continued.  It was now time to involve a specialist, tests and consultations.  We suspected allergies and worse, but all test came back negative.

We tried coaxing her to eat with favorite foods and games but she only looked at us with disdain and politely refused, or when really frustrated threw the offered food on the floor.  She lost more than 10% of her body weight and when you only weigh twenty pounds the loss of that much weight results in stick thin arms and legs.  Another round of visits to specialists ensued.

With October's arrival and without warning (that's how miracles arrive) she climbed into her highchair and was ready to eat!  Last week I arrived at her house with ice cream sandwiches and Caroline's smile was ear to ear.  I wish I had snapped a photo of her enjoying the over-sized treat with chocolate smeared all over her face.  It was a joy to see her enjoying food once again, and nothing short of a miracle in my belief book.  Some things are unexplainable and in the hands of a power source smarter than man.  It is the way life works.

I could not help but compare Caroline's pause from eating with the dry spells I've experienced in my real estate business.  Business can be flowing at an even keel, then suddenly, for no apparent reason, it comes to a grinding halt or an insufficient trickle.  Our first impulse can be to panic and wonder what is wrong.  There is nothing wrong with an examination of current practices, but if all seems healthy, it probably is, and business will return in due time if we keep our systems in place.

If we keep the opportunity to "eat" in front of our prospects and past clientele they will come to the table when they are ready to partake of our offering.  Not necessarily when we are ready to feed them.

“There are two ways to live: You can live as if nothing is a miracle; or, you can live as if everything is a miracle.”
Albert Einstein

I choose the latter.

Hi Norma,
Thanks for sharing.
Well…Caroline thought you an important lesson about business at such a tender age.
That’s a true miracle and lesson in disguise.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Norma,

That's an interesting parallel. However, when I have a dry spell at work, I usually start eating.

Norma- well glad everything checked out ok... and your precious granddaughter decided to do things in her own way on her own time.  Wonder if this is a hint at things to come.

Norma,  I love this post!  So well written and so true.  I’m glad Caroline’s pause in eating is a thing of the past. Your analogy to not eating and the flow of business, or lack thereof, and the tendency to panic is relatable!  I choose to believe everything is a miracle!  How could I not? Life itself is a miracle. You inspired me to participate in the challenge!  Thank you.

So glad to hear everything turned out OK. What a mystery! And it certainly was a good analogy to our business, no doubt others as well.

I've heard about a little 2-year-old that's doing the same thing.  I'm praying for the same miracle for her! Thanks for your encouraging story.

Hi Norma!  What a great analogy and thankfully little Miss Caroline is now eating again!  The roller coaster rides in this business are very similar--one day we're freeting that we may not be eating next month; the next, we're wishing we had another assistant!
