I started a group after I started a community garden in Laurinburg, NC called the Active Laurinburg Group in 2008 to help stimulate Laurinburg adults to become more active in physical and social activities for their health and happiness.  Another goal of the group was to have an action-packed calendar of activities that would help us attract more people and retain more people to our area as an economic stimulus for our local economy.  We don't have large body of water or mountains that would attract people but if we have more activities then that helps make up for that.  We hope to be attracting working adults from nearby towns and young retirees looking for a place to have fun in their retirement years.  I believe that people seeing people having fun is a great way to promote a community as an "Active Community".

Our calendar tries to showcase a variety of community activites like festivals, storytelling events, art events, runs, walks, bridge tournaments, golf tournaments, concerts, plays, dances, lectures, etc. that are happening in and around Laurinburg.  We promote college events from St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, Richmond Community College in Rockingham, UNC Pembroke in Pembroke, Lumber River Canoe Club floats and Scotland High School games.  These are posted as notes with details about the events for those visiting our site.

We currently have a leadership team of 46 assistant organizers promoting things that they are passionate about like bridge, dancing, bicycling, gardening, Zumba, Tai Chi, Yoga, lake sailing, basketball, tennis, pick-up soccer, adult kick-ball, outdoor activities and organizational events for other groups or clubs that they belong, etc.  We schedule "Meetups" where members can RSVP to attend so others can see who is attending and that helps with the success of the event.

Basically, we are a promotional group with members on www.meetup.com and on www.facebook,com.  Our postings on these sites helps spread the word for those that do not listen to the radio, read the newspaper or magazines where things are also promoted.  I like the calendar features of the meetup site that helps our group tie-in with other groups that share our group's interests nearby and throughout the country.  You can never promote too much!

I really like when people join and give their reasons for joining.  Many are newcomers looking for people that share their interests during their free time and many are people that have lived here their entire lives.  We are growing and we are promoting new things all the time.  If you live in Laurinburg and want to help our group grow our membership and activities, go to www.activelaurinburg.com and join.  Membership is free and open to anyone over 18 years old that wants to be an active adult!

Checkout this site and make sure to click on the Activity Calendar to see all of the things going on in Laurinburg.  If you want to relocate here and need a mortgage, let me know!

Sam--absolutely marvelous marketing strategy and way to give back to the community. I would've loved to have seen some PICTURES!  Can you do some follow-up posts showing some of those active people doing activties that you can share on ActiveRain?

Just a thought to make it even more interesting!
