Painting a Fireplace

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Elite RM423455

Painting a fireplace before pictureHow do you feel about painting an older fireplace? I used to have mixed emotions, but after my daughter and I spent 6 months rehabbing her house in Lancaster, PA, I am a convert.

She had a red brick fireplace which had darken soot on its face. My daughter had a vision of painting her fireplace. Since it was her house, I simply told her, “It’s up to you!” I held my tongue, not sure what I thought. She wanted to paint it milk chocolate brown.

Well, today, I stand a convert. I enthusiastically love her milk chocolate brown fireplace. It looks fantastic. I will paint the fireplace in any property I buy from here on in. Check out the before and after pictures. What do you think?

I've observed a few painted fireplaces in the past few months and all of them looked very nice. I suppose choice of color would have a lot to do with how nice it looks in the end. Thanks for sharing.

It does look great, but in the future I would put a granite tiles over it. It is not that hard to do, but will bring more modern look to it...

It is just my opinion :)

Have a great day!

I like it.  And I too have never been a fan of painted brick.  Is she going to use it?  I would have gone with black on the inside if she's going to use it.

The fireplace looks great, I know people often don't want to paint over wooden trim either, but I've seen some before and after photos that are great with painted trim.

David, color does make a difference. I find I am way too conservative when it comes to color.

I like what you suggest Tatyana. I will keep that in the back of my mind. However, modern would probably not make much sense in the style of house.

Tammy, great idea with black in the back. She hopes to have a gas insert installed at some point. She will not use it as a wood fireplace.

Michelle, paint can make all the difference in the world.

Hi Cal,

for sure there are situations where painting is by far the best way, others like in the really dramatic fireplaces or historic homes, there are excellent ways to bring the original appeal back to life

What I love best about the story is that you and your daughter were doing it together, you let her make the decision, and your both happy with it. That's what matters!

Peter and Linda, this definitely created much more beauty.

Glad you like it Kathy.

Thanks for the comments, Joni. My daughter worked very hard to make this house her home and it is a great property now.
