Powerboat race Key WestTalk about the sound of power – -  the most powerful boats in the world will be roaring around our island from November 6-13 as they compete in the Key West Powerboat World Championship Race.  Key West fills with teams of powerboats and their crews and thousands of excited fans. The sight of incredibly fast boats showing off their “rooster tails” as they speed around Key West and through the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean is quite a thrill.

Fans are able to view the boats and engines close up and meet the crews in Key Wests “Race Village” set up at Truman Annex.  The village opens at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 6 and the race boats are on display.  At 4:00 p.m. the Boat Parade will be held on Duval Street.  The next days are filled with preparations including testing of race boats and inspections.  The first race starts at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November. 9.  A complete schedule of events and race times is available at superboat.com.

This year marks the 31st annual Powerboat Championship Race and the race is hosted by Super Boat International which is based in Key West. I enjoy reading the history of powerboat racing in Key West. It reflects the typical “carefree” attitude of a time before rules and regulations.  An article by Allen Brown in last year’s race program states, “In the good old days there were no rules, at least not many. The boat must finish with the original crew the book said, so they turned around, put the injured driver back in the boat, tied him to the transom and roared back into the lead.”  Obviously much more attention is given to safety today!

The speed and power is fun to watch during the Key West Powerboat World Championship Race and of course the parties and parades add to the entertainment.  Take a few minutes to check out scenes from a past race – can’t you feel the excitement!
