Nature's Drugstore & Cowboy Toilet Paper

Nature’s Drugstore & Cowboy Toilet Paper

It started out with a few photos of these curious plants; I thought they were pretty, especially with the fall colored scenery behind them.

A few days later, at the Glacier View Meadows office, I learned the plant’s name:  Common Mullein (Verbascum Thapsus) -sometimes called the Great Mullein because they grow up to 6 feet tall.

!

At the GVM office there was a small handout stating some concern that this Common Mullein is cropping up more frequently in our meadows and on our hillsides.

Just one Mullein plant can produce 300,000 to-500,000 seeds and those seeds can survive 50-80 years in the soil before germinating!

!

A little more research on this unusual plant revealed that it has healing properties and is used as an herbal remedy for sore throats, coughs, lung disease and a variety of other ailments.

Mullein tea is made from the leaves (the seeds are poisonous) and a tinture made from the flowers can be used to help migraine headaches.

In Nature’s Drugstore, you can find a cough, sore throat and headache remedy on Aisle 3 County Rd 74E in Livermore, Colorado.

I could have lived the rest of my life happily unaware of this fact;

but in the mid-western United States (including Colorado) Mullein is commonly known as Cowboy Toilet Paper (because the leaves are soft and velvety).

I hesitated to include that information here but, you never know when this tidbit of knowledge may come in handy

and Real Estate Agents have a duty to disclose all known facts. :-]

Hi Mary!  I enjoyed your pharmacology lesson.  I think people in your neck of the woods have something going for them.  Why, just last week Sharon asked me to run and get her some Tylenol and toilet tissue.  You have your own convenience store in your back yard!!!  Just step outside and presto-- no headache relief or toilet paper runs in the middle of the night.

Who needs a drugstore back in town, when nature supplies what you need!!!

Mary,

So is Bruce right...no need to go to the drug store?

Tammy, in a strange way I think it's pretty too, who knew it had so many uses?! Maybe Donald could cut it down and make tea? LOL

Hi Joetta, I hope there wouldn't be any confusion there either!  I imagine the leaves are harvested before the plant goes to seed?  So many plants have good and bad qualities, like rhubarb: stalks-good, leaves=bad! :-)

Hi Ann, HA! Yes, isn't it good to know these things? Armed with this knowledge, Bruce is right, but I suspect the majority would still opt for the drugstore for tissue or maybe the health food store to purchase their mullein tea.

Hi Maria, I'm glad you stopped to comment eventhough you already knew about the cowboy TP- thanks about the photos :-)

Hi Dorie, this plant is in Texas I'm sure! Now we both know !:-]

Hi Bruce, that's so true! But I'm just giggling imagining you, if you lived here, walking in the door with a handful of leaves for Sharon's request!

Hi Rich, that's a fact! You never know when you might need this wondrous tidbit of knowledge! :-)

Thank you for your comments today everyone - I hope you have a terrific Thursday!

Mary - There have been at least 5 generations in my family that have held quite a bit of knowledge about plant medicine and herbs.  When my grandson was in preschool, he'd often show up with a paper bag (his idea).  Inside the bag was usually a small ball, a toy car, and Mullein leaves:-)

A few years ago, I took a really bad fall when my ladder tumbled and spilled me off and onto the edge of my brick patio.  I was sure to be a mess for awhile.  But my daughter drove down to the greenbelt area near home, collected up some Mullein leaves, scored them a bit, and wrapped my thigh.  I was astonished to find that I didn't even bruise, and I was hardly even sore.

There are folks that will want to hack down things they don't understand.  They don't realize that nature has put them there with good reason!

Hi Bruce, Fort Collins isn't that far away, but for those who don't want to harvest their own sundries and or remedy- Red Feather is much closer :-)

Myrl, that is the best information about this useful plant, yet!  Thank you for sharing that here.  Several years ago, I started using and studying essential oils, my son-in-law and daughter teased me by calling me "Grandma Mary Medicine Woman" but what I've learned so far really only scratches the surface.  Plants can be powerful and knowing how to use them is a must.

Your 5 generations of this knowledge is invaluable!  I'm glad that your daughter knew the Mullein would heal. I have to agree with you- your last 2 sentences are right on! Thanks, Myrl.

Hi Joan, maybe everyone will think of me when they see this plant?! Several hundred little "road signs" with my name on them! LOL  Thanks Joan!

Mary, Wow, the things we learn here on Active Rain. I would love to try the Mullein leaves for their medicinal qualities.  They sound like they can do wonders.  Well, I guess it's going to be two trips for you from now on...one to the store for your groceries and the other to behind the Glacier View Meadows office to pick your toilet paper for the week.

Mary so glad you did the research what interest facts.   I remember when I was growing up my grandmother knew what medicinal benefits could be derived from some of the native plant.  It work because she never went to the doctor.  I miss that way of life.

Jane,  now we have that "Cowboy Knowledge" too! :-)

Hi Sandy, Mullein does have many uses, that's true!  I had to laugh about the second trip out to pick the toilet paper for the week- might have to wait for Spring for the TP harvest! HAHA!

Hi Debbie,  Migraines can be so debilitating - check out the health food store for Mullein Tea, or a more flavorful blend that has  Mullein in it and  let me know if it helps. You know I would send some out but they're looking a little frozen right now;  I would have picked them and dried them beforehand if I had only known!

Hi Ann, did you think I would go very far?  Thanks for checking in, friend!

Jennifer, so many of the old ways have disappeared from the mainstream.  Our grandparents and so many generations before them learned the benefits and uses of plants and herbs ... and never even thought about going to the doctor- amazing!

I think most folks don't realize that at least 1/3 of our prescriptions from pharmaseutical companies come from natural plant life initially.  Another third comes from minerals and elements existent on the planet.  The pharma companies are anxious to gather 'em up, extract the components, put a patent on it, and then charge the big bucks for buying it in either pill form, elixer, or ointment:-)
