Nervous Sweats

Services for Real Estate Pros with ActiveRain

Do listing appointments give you butterflies?  What about public speaking or a team meeting where you're presenting?  Did your super attractive waiter make you stutter over your lunch order?  How about flying or going to a party where you knew nobody.  We are all human and experience some form of nerves here and there.  It's a good reminder that we are alive!

When was the last time you were nervous?

Shakespeare said this: Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player, that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more; it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

Well I want to disagree because if we didn't get out and let people know about us (marketing) how would they ever come to know how much of a difference we can make in theirs lives.

I say this for all home stagers...

I used to get super nervous when Ben would take me up on stage at RainCamp.  And I was only telling you all where to go for lunch!

I used to be nervous meeting new people, talking in public; however, I have overcome this nervousness by reminding myself that being nervious can show other people a lack of self-confidence.....

For me it's usually right before a big party that I'm throwing - did I forget to invite someone, will guests arrive before I'm ready. It used to be the fear of public speaking, but that one is a little more under control now.

What an interesting subject matter! I love the response of #7. Inhaling deeply and taking twice as long to exhale.

I’ve performed on stage since the age of 15 and I gotta tell you, I still get nerves “the day of” a concert or a live performance, especially if I know great players will be in the audience. So, it goes without saying I get nervous before a listing appointment or when first meeting a potential client. However, I believe nerves are a “good” thing, you know, we still have a pulse and care about what we’re doing and we want to perform to the best of our abilities!!

Thanks for the post.

The more you do it the better off you are. Unfortunately, not all of us are engaged in speaking to the public or an audience. The more you know about a subject the better you can do...because you do not have to memorize anything...then when your stuck its easy for you to find something else to talk about. Unknown material...rehearse, rehearse, rehearse, until your blue in the face, know it backwards and forwards and everything there is to know about it and your nerves will be a whole lot better...Wayne

I am not nervous about much about business unless a transaction is falling apart, although like Tammy (#8), I hate talking on the phone!  I don't like to drive and the older I've become, the less I like to drive.  I get so nervous driving on highways I have set my GPS to no highways/tollways.  My husband hates it when he's using it and my settings are on it, and vice versa.

I get so nervous on highways I won't do it anymore.  My hands sweat, my back contracts and my heart races.  I've even cried.  When my husband wants me as his designated driver it's only with the knowledge that we're taking the "scenic tour" and don't bug me about it.

I've been attacking this for the past two years!  Cold calls, pitch meetings, etc.  You have to embrace the anxiety and turn it into excitement.  Jitters never help anyone!

Cold calling listing appointments make me a bit nervous, but as I started doing more and more, it was just another exercise that I got better at doing!  An attractive man who engages me still manages to make me blush though...:)

When I first started doing this, I would get nervous when meeting someone for the first time, but I think it was mainly because I wanted to be sure to make a good impression.  Now?  I think I've gotten my pitch down to where I can say "Nervous?"  Not so much.

I start off very nervous, but then my confidence kicks in and I'm ok after that.  I learned that the more I'm in front of people the better I get.

I still get a little nervous when I meet a client for the first time, but only for about 5 seconds. Basements make me nervous if I'm alone...I've been afraid of basements since I was a little girl, and yes, I'm aware that this is pathetic and a very inconvenient fear to have as a Realtor :-)

Like Tammy, I absolutely hate the phone.  In person, I can handle most situations but the phone is my dreaded means of communication.  For absolutely no explainable reason, sometimes I just fall apart on the phone.  Lame anyone?

Although I am gaining confidence over time, listing appointments still make me nervous. Mainly because you know you are being interviewed and if you give an answer they don't agree with you just lost the listing. I am always truthful in my answers and tell them what they need to hear versus what they want to here.

Tammy #8 described EXACTLY how I feel too.  It's actually been rough on some of my family and friend relationships because people take it personally.  I'm in real estate and am on the phone all day long and it is something I hate more than many many things.  Weird huh?  Tammy, thanks for making me feel a little more normal.  :-)

Also, love Gene's answer, #38.

When I first got into real estate, I would get nervous, but after 8 years, I feel very comfortable with the whole process and on top of all the contracts. I tend to focus my energy more now.
