It is extremely important to prepare your Seattle home for the winter. While most people remember to buy warm clothes and footwear, many totally overlook their homes. Nothing can be more uncomfortable if not dangerous, than a freezing house during the cold winter months.
There are aspects of your home that you must ensure are working well before winter sets is. These include:
· Security Systems
Ensure that all your security systems like alarms, smoke detectors and fire extinguishers are working well. Carry out any maintenance and repairs needed before it gets too cold and do a test on each component to make sure they are all working.
· Insulation
Check out all insulation in your home and make any necessary additions. It is recommended to have 12 inches of insulation around your Seattle home, especially in your attic. If you are not very confident in laying your own insulation, get a professional to help you out.
· Ducts
Ensure that you ducts are in proper alignment. If they are not, you can end up losing heat from your central heating system through these ducts. Look out for exposed ducts especially in the attic and basement and repair them using insulating tape.
· Windows
This is the time to put up your storm windows for that extra layer of protection. If your windows are broken or drafty, ensure that they are replaced and sealed. Windows can be expensive so it is important to budget for them early enough. Heavy winter curtains are also a great addition to keep your Seattle house warm and cozy.
· Pipes
Frost is known to cause pipes to burst. Ensure that all pipes are drained and shut off the water to any exterior hosepipes. You can also take advantage of insulation to keep your pipes from freezing up. Wrap pipes with heating tape or use insulation made from fiberglass to help winterize your Seattle home.
