Remedy for flies? This restaurant swears it works. Barb's Barbeque in Searcy AR

By

I's just a standing there waitin' for my barbeque which I'd ordered at the window of Barb's Barbeque in Searcy Arkansas on West Pleasure Street.

I glanced to the side and there just ahangin' on the wall was this bag of water.  Just a bag o' water!

Well, this is just a really old and popular little barbeque joint with no dirve through.  You walk up to the window, place your order and they deliver it in a few minutes.  They do a ton of business and most of Searcy has stood at that window at some time in the past 50 years.

But I don't think that bag of water was that old.  Have a look-see.

Bag of water

My curiousity got the best of me.

"Tell me now.....what is that bag of water hanging out here for?"

The reply, "It's to keep the flies away!  And it really works."

I haven't tried it yet but if I have an outdoor dinner, I'm planning to do so.

It must be newfangled because otherwise folks of old could have done away with fly-catcher strands........... but at that time they didn't have a plastic bag.

Dear Godmother,

When I barbecue my biggest problem is keeping Mr Charles away.

Nutsy, of course Mr. C is out to eat YOU, not your barbeque.

I have seen those and heard they work but never tried them either...the farmers I know don't bother with the water trick and they have plenty of flies in their neck of the woods...so I just figured it was something that city folks thought up...whatever works...they have always become a conversation piece...I love the ones who hang them over the tops of the doors...I can see that being real useful at times...hahaha.

BBQ squirrel...I wonder why we never had that?

Be sure and let us know your findings with the water verses flies!

Debbie, if it works you'd think those farmers out in the back woods would know about it.  But my intent was for the Sleuths to test it and let us know how it works.  Assign it it Little Luke.

Barbara, do you know that before it was "Barb's Barbecue"  it was DUNCAN'S BARBECUE????   Back in the 50's and 60's we used to go to Duncan's all the time....best barbecue in the land.  I'm glad to know that it still is.  We'll be in Searcy during the holidays....maybe we can get some barbecue.  I guess if you put those two names together, it would be "Barb Duncan's Barbecue".   Sound familiar??????

Barbara, I've been hesitant to mention but........didn't you do a blog featuring this bag of water keeping flies away a few years ago?

I had to Google this bag of water fly repellant and found this.

The most likely explanation seems to be light refraction from the water filled bag. This confuses insects.

Or not! Read on in the article.

Wow as something as easy as that can keep them little flies away! I love it and now that I need to make sure to write it down because I will forget by the time spring gets here. Thanks for the tip!

Debbie, try it on your back porch.  Wonder if it works for mosquitos too?

Billy, I have been here long enough to remember when it was Duncan's.  In fact, I think one of Dude's relatives started it and made the sauce and the mustard slaw and sold it to another Duncan who sold it to probably Barb.  This Barb has had it for a long time.  You know, Billy, I have hardly ever been called Barb....only by a very few people.

Mary, I don't look forward to winter weather.  I'm glad it is beginning with you!

Anita, I don't remember doing one but that does not mean I didn't.  In fact, when the girl brought my sandwich my question was hesitant like, "Remind me....what is this bag of water for...."  Find the old one and prove to me that my memory is bad.

Don, what about mosquitos.  Think it would work to confuse them?

John, I do not guarantee it so be careful.

Ms. B...Willard asked:  If the water freezes will it prevent raindeer from getting on the roof?

Pray our squirrel is out for good...we got some more places closed up today while he was out in the sunshine...sure hope this works cause he had ate a hole back into Luke's room.  Nervous little fellow...mothballs sure didn't hinder him at all...I didn't think any animals liked those things...He must be a smart little whip and just threw them out...

I'd give him Nutsy's address but....I don't think anyone deserves this freeloader...I hope he is gone for good.

Debbie:  I can give you the name and number of very good, professional squirrel exterminators.  They are NOT CHEAP, but are very thorough and their work is guaranteed for one year following the extermination.  I thought we'd never get rid of the flying squirrels who had taken up residence in our house....all our home remedies did not work.  You have to find out where they are getting in ....but then when you do, they will find another way.  It is not easy.

Anita, maybe I'm not looney yet.  : )

Debbie, I think my cute little Luke is befriending that nice squirrel.  : )  Anita makes it sound as if we could make a movie about Squirrels vs Humans and it might be as popular as "The Birds."  Remember that one?
