As I look back on my life so far, I can recognize many miracles that have occured.  In fact, they happen everyday! Some big, some small, and as I look over my desk right now, I see my mom across the hall and I remember that all things are possible, including miracles and I remember that one big miracle that just keeps on giving.

When I was just 17 years old, I remember the first miracle that changed my life forever.  Or maybe because of this particular miracle, the rest have faded out of my mind.  It was summer and I was at home with a few friends.  When our minister knocked at the front door, I knew immediately that something was wrong and I was right.  Mom had been in a car accident.  For some reason I wasn't afraid until I arrived at the hospital an hour away to hear Dr. Ruiz say, "You're mother will never make it through the night".  My  sister and I called mom's nine brothers and sisters, and we all sat at the hospital in fear for the next several hours.  The hours seemed like days, and we were only allowed to briefly see her.  With the blood and large pieces of glass protruding from her head & body, it felt like a nightmare.

The next morning, she was still alive, and the doctors were amazed... We were still scared. At that point, Dr. Ruiz said they couldn't believe that she had made it through the night and that it looked like she was going to pull through, but unfortunately, she would never walk again.  It was going to be a long journey for all of us.  With the Halo Brace and physical therapy to the removal of glass, and then... what the heck were we supposed to do?  I was just a kid, but I sure did grow up a lot during that time.

Just a few weeks after the accident, as my sister and I sat in the hospital room, Mom walked in (with the help of a walker) and a trail of doctors & nurses crying and cheering behind!  By fall, she was home.  My sister and I cared for her, bathing her, changing her clothes and treating the wounds where the bolts were screwed into her skull from the Halo Brace. Mom couldn't drive with the halo Brace, but as soon as possible, she got a job across the street at a market and would walk to work everyday .... because she could.  At the time, I thought she was crazy, but looking back and knowing what I know now, She had a plan, she always did.

I always knew she was the strongest person in my life and she has proven that in more ways than one.  You see, our lives changed forever that day, and not a morning goes by that I don't call my mom.... Just to hear the miracle of her voice.  When I arrive at the office each day, I watch her across the hall as I sip my coffee and thank God for the greatest Miracle of our lives.

My mom runs everyday now... because she can, and often wins the races & marathons she participates in.  She is proof that miracles happen!  She often asks me to join her in the races, but every time I see her run across the finish line, I get a lump in my throat and am reminded at the miracle that blessed all of our lives and I'm not willing to give that up... just yet!

Because of my mom, Every day, I experience the miracle of life and I am so proud of her.  My mom is my hero.... one miraculous woman who has taught me how to be strong, how to never, ever give up, how to Love with all of my heart, how to appreciate the blessings in my life, how to enjoy the simple things, how to keep going when it feels like the world is against me, how to work hard and always give 110%.... She is my miracle, and she reminds me every day.... Just by being alive!

Peggy,  What a great story.  It is truly amazing what a human can do when other humans say you can't. Your mother is terrific, however you already knew that.

Amy - I so admire your mom!  What a strong lady!  My mom was an inspiration to me all my life.  She passed away in March, but she taught me how to be strong.  It's the best gift she could have given.  To enjoy life, you have to be strong, or else you will be buffeted around by events instead of controlling your destiny.

Ellen - Even when she is sick or injured, she runs everyday!  When I question her, and say mom, you need to rest, why are you running?  She answers with , "because I can".  She is my inspiration!

Hi Amy,

That is an incredible story of faith and perseverence.  You sure did have to grow up quick when something like this happens.  You must be so happy for such a wonderful outcome for your mom after the accident.
