What does the first snow mean to you?

Yesterday, an October snow storm swept through the Colorado Springs area.  Fortunately, I did not have to deal with any crises since my water pipes had been wrapped and the tender plants were in.    After having lived in College Station, Texas, where it rarely snows, I thought the snow was pretty exciting.

Granted, I was disappointed that I had to work.  I would rather have been able to enjoy the snowy day at home with a cup of hot chocolate and a toasty fire.   I still managed to take a few photos.

Rearing Horse Sculpture in October Snow in Colorado Springs

The snow and the cold weather makes me look forward to catching up on some of the indoor chores that I've put off.

It makes me look forward to the rapidly approaching holidays.  It makes me look forward to planning for next year.   The first snow makes me realize that winter has arrived.

What does the first snow mean to you?

This "Rearing Horse" sculpture, by Don Green, is one of my favorite sculptures that I have found in the Colorado Springs area.  It is located between Centennial Hall and the Pikes Peak Fine Arts Center in  downtown Colorado Springs.

Sondra, I just got siding and scaffolding for my mom;s house in Wyoming  -- so snow means a challenge.  At the same time it is always so beautiful. Your photo of the statue is great. I guess you could say the snow has changed him into a pinto.

It's great to see your post.  I've been gone quite a bit and am now back so i have been watching for you.  Have a great week.

Just a little early for snow but hey it's very pretty at the beginning of the season.  We lived in Durango for a few years and now we're working hard to get back over there.

Good morning Sondra. A charming post and picture. The first snow always reminds me that time is marching on and things change. Nonetheless, change is exciting. Snowfall is special.

Hi Sondra. I like the rare snows I get and the quietness of the snow falling and how the whole landscape is instantly transformed into like this winter wonderland. It is an enjoyable change of season from the non-snowy times. With the higher elevation areas I imagine the snow in the deepest part of winter can stay around a lot longer. That rearing horse sculpture looks to have been done by quite the talented artist in Don Green. Great pic as always.

Sondra--THRILLED to see you out and about and back on AR!  I've missed you very much. The pinto adjective, how creative of Gary. And "charming post"--yup. You also brought out the poet in Gary.

Having lived in Buffalo NY for the first 12 years of my life, I'm not QUITE as enamored. When it's as high as you are on the sides of the roads, it can be daunting and a bit less romantic after several months of it.

I hadn't thought about the first one. Hmmmm....layering (as in clothes!), watching the dogs bounce around in it, the purity of it and the quiet stark quality it brings out here...delicate--I think it can bring a pensiveness to the day. I am reading Thoreau's Walden and his chapter Winter Animals is the one I'm on right now. How apropos!

I never mind the snow, but I hate the ice that we seem to get in the Ozarks.

Sondra,

Love the photo, love even more that I don't live where that happens!

Hi everyone, thank you for your comments.  Today almost all of the snow melted, so I'm really glad that Colorado Springs generally isn't prone to the conditions that Gayle described.  I was surprised that it wasn't more icy also.

Instead of commenting more here, I'm off to each of your posts to catch up on what is happening in your world.

Great photo!  Yikes!   I just went trail riding 2 days ago in 60 degrees, still sunny here, but cold nights.

Hi Sondra,

The first snow gets me thinking about ski season!  I do like to get past Halloween before we see any snow in PA, but after that, I love the snow.

Hi Sondra, I had my last snow days while I was stationed in Denver, CO back in the 80s. It's beautiful to see the snow come down, and have a warm cup of coffee by your fireplace. The only thing about the snow that I regret is having to get out there and shovel it so I could get to work every morning, I certainly don't miss doing that.

Hi Sondra~ Snow in Seattle means a city to myself!

With all of our hilly streets, Downtown Seattle was not built with snow in mind!

When it snowed here last year, we pretty much shut down for a few days while the salt trucks and snow plows got busy clearing way for folks to make their way back into the Emerald City...

I love the photograph.

Dolores and I had to cancel our planned weekend trip to Pennsylvania because of the early season snow.  We also got a lot of indoor work done over the weekend.

Hi Sondra,

I have to change my answer.  I want to get past Halloween and have all the leaves off the trees before I see snow.  Then I love it!

Hi Sondra - I don't like snow and am so glad it melts away between storms. But the first snowstorm does have a certain magic to it. I find myself madly trying to squeeze in garden cleanup time in the fall, so spring is less busy. But the first snowfall sets me free from that obsession. After the first snowfall whatever does still get done is just a bonus.

Well Sondra,

Cherise and I were walking the beaches in Florida (85 degree temps) when Colorado was being pelted by snow.  We were glad to dodge the first one.  However, as you know, Colorado does not disappoint as we await tomorrow's radical change in weather... g

Great picture. The blog roll is kind of slow tonight in new ones coming on and the topics that interest me. I'm going through and reading old blogs from friends on AR. We already have some snow. It's headed your way. Spring is taking a break and reminding us it's only mid March. Here's one of my chive plants holding it's own against the cold and snow. They are pretty hardy once they start to come up. Spring Gardening
