The Hoe Down on Holding Down- Roof Staples- A Wenatchee Home Inspector

One the most important components of a home is the roof. This is the beginning protection from Mother Nature’s assault on the home.

This is also an area when many short-cuts are taken and poor workmanship is performed. Who is going to go up there look, right?

Well this Wenatchee Home Inspector is! All too often I see poor flashing details, shingle installation and sloppy nailing.

Here is an example of a roofer that should be pinned to the deck.

                               Roofing Staple

This was a roof-over, where the new roof was directly installed over the existing roof (Bad- Bad- Bad). Though this practice is allowed (2 layers only), I think it should be outlawed (my humble opinion).

To top it all off is that these shingle were installed using staples. Poorly installed. Many roofing manufactures do not allow this practice and the roof will be voided if applied in this manner.

But in all practical terms they just do not perform well.

Waiting for the next big blow

On this specific roof I could lift sections of the roof up due to the fact the staples have not penetrated the roof below into the decking. This roof is just one wind storm away from being the neighbor’s lawn ornament.

Roof are expensive, but this not the place where you want to pinch pennies. Hiring a roofing contractor that will do the job right will be less expensive over the long haul.

Remember to get several quotes, check references, ask will they be replacing all the flashings and how long will they warranty their work. This will help you make a good decision.

Roofs are expensive. When they fail prematurely because they are installed poorly or incorrectly they become even more expensive.

Great information, Don.

John, This is so true. Why take an expensive decision and make it more expensive. In our area, the spring and fall brings higher winds and I see many roofs fail.

I thought that when the staples are up like that it is easier to remove them.  That's the point, right?    ;>)

How often has it been now since I've seen roofs with a fillion staples sticking through the top layer.  Let me count.

Check in tomorrow...

Good Morning Donald, looks like a DIY roofing project with someone who did not know how to adjust the depth of the wide crown stapler!  Great photos and input!

Donald -- When I was in George, we had a contractor put new shingles on building, and I told our laiason that it wasn't being done right.  The first big wind storm (which wasn't too long in coming in George) took off nearly a dozen shingles.  The contractor came back and fixed them, and then the next storm took off about 10 more.  If he had only done it right in the first place.

Steve, Like George we are in the Columbia valley and get pretty good wind storms at various times of the year. These poor practices show up quite often here. I will see many roofs with fairly large sections of their roof gone and laying around the neighborhood.

With those raised staples you're also finding unbonded (not glued) shingle tabs. So with a wind there's a way (for it to srtip off large patches of roofing material.

Robert,

You are correct. There was many issues going on here. This roof was ready for lift off at any point in time.

Reuben,  I know you think the same way there may be many practices out there that should just not be done whether allowed or not.

Staples have not been allowed out here since 2002.
